They didn't really drop TRON entirely, only the desktop version. For embedded work, TRON is one of the most used operating systems.

Back when I worked in Japan, there were many products and systems that the Japanese made but never exported. When I asked why, the answer was that translations and legal issues were too much of a hassle, and that a market of 120 million Japanese was plenty good enough. The huge US pressure made export unappealing for most others than the very largest Japanese corporations.
Most Japanese software that gets exported isn't consumer facing, It's all embedded deep in medical devices, cars, robotics, etc.
