      >Religions try to come together to propel humanity forward after robots almost BTFO humans.
      >Within a year most of them renounce that horseshit they came up with and religion goes on and keeps spreading to all 13,000 planets while the Bene Geserit subvert that religion for their profit.
      >The entire book is about religion.
      >Literally everyone believes in the spirit of humanity.
      >Atheist.
You might have read one of Brian's book. It's hard to tell because he puts the word "Dune" in all of the titles, but Sandworms of Dune is not Dune.

The whole point is that religion is always-already "subverted" and used for cynical and entirely immanent ends. Dunc is gaytheist trash

LOTR is written from a perspective of Christian morality. Tho it's highly masculine, aristocratic and chivalric,it still cannot escape such low-points as embracement of pity (Gollum arch),rejection of passion (Boromir is an ambiguous character, despite being the most lively and human of all) and other moralisms, that however in any way don't diminish the overall greatness of this work.
Dune,on the other hand, makes very clear references to Islam (Jihad,Muad'dib,Fremens, desert lore)and embraces it (remember,we're talking about the Dune, not the later books that demolish the myth). Therefore it embraces revenge over forgiveness,will-power (Paul's challenges,Litanny Against Fear),and also the archetype of strong individual leading his men to battle (non-existent in the New Testament-based morality).
Of course Tolkien also embraces such stalwart ideals, and Herbert later demolishes them all, however my argument remains.
Personally,I definetly prefer LOTR,also due to the fact how faithul Tolkien is to the myth He made,as all His works uphold it,while Herbert sends it all down the drain,in order to state a philosophical point. That doesn't change the fact that Dune remains a great work embracing the power and self-determination of the individual, a largely personal adventure, while in LOTR it's all about the greater good, moral obligation and destiny....
I personally like LOTR more, but I salute anyone who chooses Dune

Sooooo hard to get through. I've tried three times. The prose is gorgeous but my goodness it's long winded.

I never really found it long winded. I got so absorbed in the prose and characters that I never wanted the words to stop. The verboseness actually added to the charm for me, if anything. Peake also never used a word that didn't deserve to be there, despite using quite a lot of them in his descriptions.

I like Dune, but to me LotR is the greater work. There is so much depth to LotR because Tolkien spent his whole life developing it.

That is a great and unique book. Its strengths are quite different from LotR I would say. Tolkien has solid and comfy prose, but Gormenghast is fabulous, almost lurid. It's easily superior to LotR or Dune as a work of literature, as in a book to read. But I think there is a lot to be said for the depth behind LotR.

      Why not both?

It's fun to read, but the story kind of peters out. It doesn't have the cohesive vision of LotR or Dune.

For entertainment purposes? LOTR for somewhat interesting philosophical musings? Dune.

LOTR is more enjoyable of the two however. Dunes first book is pretty fricking boring

LOTR wins because it's actually written well. Tolkien alongside Peake and Wolfe is one of the only writers who seem to understand sci-fi/fantasy is literature too and should have good prose
