The teacher is wrong. People do not generally know how to figure out how much weight bridges hold, calculator interest rates, or program video game graphics. People are generally like the kid asking why we have to be taught math.

The truth is we teach math to everyone so that a small fraction of society will go on to use it. But if math were optional, I think much of that small fraction would quit, and only people who really like math would learn math. But teachers will never admit that because if kids were told their participation didn't matter they would no longer participate in this lie that we should all do math.

It's really time and resource inefficient but I can't think of a better system. There's no way to know for sure everyone that will be using math and everyone that won't.

who uses History? who uses science? who uses literature? who uses any second language? who uses athletics? who uses art? who uses music? only a tiny few people actually use anything from school.

basically the only things we should be teaching kids is enough english to post on Instagram (e.g. forget spelling or vocabulary; you’re done by grade theee) and then health class, drivers ed, and sex ed. done. maybe electives could consist of restaurant service, check-out lane operations, and how to tape boxes for Amazon deliveries. maybe for boys we could offer martial arts and marksmanship. cooking and cleaning and baby care for girls.

The issue is that public schools can't afford to give everyone their own customized education stream for self-discovery. Private and homeschooling are a whole other matter on that front.

that’s a fricking stupid argument. Math is way cheaper to teach than say science (no labs or equipment required) and more useful. and both science and math are WAY cheaper than sports.

In this respect, the professor was correct. The purpose of teaching those things isn't to maximize the utility of the subject matter to every individual in the classroom. Rather, it's to create a society in which things like art, literature, history, language, mathematics, and science are widely known and valued. For the few people who will go on to use those things, they need to be exposed to it. But otherwise, the goals of education are aspirational. They're not designed necessarily for the world we live in, but rather, to give us inspiration for the world we can create.

In any case, learning basic math is pretty fricking easy. The problem is we coddle these kids too much and abandoned corporal punishment, so now we're stuck with these homosexualy, whiny teens who complain that learning is hard work, rather than treating it as a privilege.

what is society composed of you fricking moron? what are the atomic pieces that "know" and "value"? PEOPLE. THE INDIVIDUAL
          > The purpose of teaching those things isn't to maximize the utility of the subject matter to every individual in the classroom.

      Red is in the wrong

People who teach mach, unsurprisingly, like math for the math. And they are hostile to people that don't like math, which is most students, and don't feel the need to justify the need for math with any detail other than it is important in an abstract way.

Red feels like he has caught black criticizing the tone or focus of the comic instead of the argument, but that's part of the point. Stop treating students who don't like math with hostile answers even if the question is asked with hostility.

Also red describes how predicting and giving a detailed answer to how someone might use math in daily life as impossible. That's ridiculious. He just doesn't care to do it and he suddenly has no grit for it. It's easier for him if students just choose to like math instead. Disguised as being tough or expecting high standards to elevate his students, when really he's failing them.

Nah the purpose of school is to teach you things YOU WILL ACTUALLY USE IN WORK.

This noble idea of teaching for the sake of philosophy is out-dated and not according to the laws of capitalism.

Maybe a tiny bit of nationalist/society propaganda too for obvious reasons. Just so we dont have crimes all over the country.

The reality is a kid asking how to program video game graphics, then being told no because it’s not part of the curriculum, then going back to calculating the amount of purple sheep there are if there are 15 sheep and the ratio of green to purple is 4:3.

the student is in the right, watching my son shows me how useless the early years on education are. At his elementary school they do 1 year of math and then the next year is a review YEAR, They have told this to our faces. so out of 6 years of elementary 3 of them are dedicated for review. The science is nothing more then experiments and the languages are a lot of copying of the board mixed in with memorizing spellings. They call us complaining that he won't sit still and be quiet.

I don't understand why up until the 4th or 5th grade, why isnt 90% of the day recess?

I don't think anyone hates math. They just hate sucking at it. Throughout highschool I never met anyone who was halfway decent at math and hated it. As far as school subjects go, it is obviously the most fun. People just hate sucking at it.

And i sympathize with that. Professors and parents and teachers dont understand how genetic math is. If you suck at it there is very little you can do to get better unlike almost any other skill. People who study hard can improve their ability by 20-25% which is ok but compared to any other activity (chess, sports, etc) where you can get ten times better by just studying or playing more.

Imagine if you are a short uncoordinated, middle schooler who is in your daily pe and your graded on your performance in playing basketball. You suck, you get dunked on, cross upped but you try your hardest to get better. After school you shoot 100 3 point attempts and you get slightly better but you just cant seem to get much better. then you get dunked on by the 195 cm kid who proceeds to tell you how he doesnèt even practice. You keep trying hard but keep failing. You cant just put the ball down and say that it is not your game, you are forced to play and punished and humiliated when you fail. They call your parents and talk to them about your poor performance and your parents are shocked and afriad. The school tells you that because of this you will end up a minimum wage scumbag.

Its no wonder some people really hate math

    the situation is wrong
That zoomer is built on late night dascord chats over fortnight or whatever the cool kids play these days. His crypto coins are dressed up as 3d unicorn pancakes, he speaks fluent vrchat, and he has seen the lion share of millenials come up short in the college game already.

Everything in his life is 3d animated, gamified, and MMO'd, except his education.

These kids will brute force Np-complete problems to top dps charts.

How much faster would've you learned math if you grew up playing with things like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t4aKJuKP0Q or had access to 3blue1brown from the start? Pay them in crypto kiddies and they'll be litterally reading euclid drawing shapes in virtual reality sandboxes
