Who writed the first novel?

Who writed the first novel? A guy on twitter said the concept of a realistic but fictional account of a protagonist wasn't even conceived of until the 17th century.

i always took that to mean don quixote was one of the first novels to be more about exploring different, contrasting ideas rather than trying to preach something to the reader. which is why people call it the first modern novel.

He is right. Fantasy and myth were first. Realism was a later invention.

The Golden Ass, late 2nd century Rome.

There are some similar novels that predate it, written in Greek and widely read in Rome.

    Most are romances/adventures.
