You will notice that Satan has risen up multiple sects in order to drown the pure worship established by Jesus Christ.
First, Satan blinded the eyes of the israelites so that they would refuse to recognize the Messiah. They still stubbornly deny it today.
Then Satan invented gnostics who denied the authority of the aspotles, practiced dark magic and didn't believe that Jesus came in the flesh. They were quickly suppressed by the church fathers however.
Next, Satan actually succeeded in outnumbering true Christians when he established the Catholic church. It is nothing but a continuation of the Roman sun worship. Catholics have tainted the image of christianity in the eyes of many (see the French Revolution)
But Satan was not done. He then summoned a man named Muhammad, and instead of mixing christianity with paganism like he did with catholicism, he went even further by creating a religion that is so completely opposed to christianity in any way (ie: "Jesus didn't die", "the Bible is corrupted", "kill everyone who disagrees with you")
When the Reformation came, maybe they received help from Jehovah to restore biblical truth. But unfortunately Martin Luther and the other protestants fell short of re-establishing God's organization, as they adopted some of the same vices the Catholic church had.
