why are DE's becoming more ram hungry? especially ones like GNOME that removed like most of the shit it use to have?

It's just GNOME because GNOME is literally running on JS kek

Doesn't KDE also have a lot of JS?

It's even worse, some sort of abomination that resembles JS.

Only for shit like plasmoids. GNOME uses JS for a lot of core stuff for no good reason.

KWin scripts and KDE widgets can be written in many script languages (which is a more secure approqch than using raw binary like GNOME)

      >Gnome runs on js
Extensions are written in JS which runs in C. Calling that runs on js is like saying neovim is written in Lua because it has an extension interface in Lua.

The great thing about GNOME is that although I don't use GNOME, they often make changes to GNOME that somehow magically frick up programs I do use.

Maybe you should try using one of the lighter desktop environments like LXDE or MATE instead of your tinkertroony bloatware.

How much is too much RAM usage? How long is a piece of string?
As far as I'm concerned, I don't care how much RAM is being used as long as I can perform the actions I want to

    triple buffering
    everything being styled with css
everything being hooked into d-bus and session and settings daemons
    systemd/d-bus/pam session tracking
    large sized image resources
    file metadata indexing
    javascript engine
app resources cached for quick launch
    display manager memory leaks

I could implement all of this from scratch, allocate x3 memory on purpose just to frick with end users and it would STILL use less RAM than average bloated DE

Instead you are unemployed living in your mother's basement. But of course you could replicate the success of the Syrian apple owner or the success of the Indian AI revolutionary. You're just choosing to be poor. Obviously.

Wow, that uses more idle RAM than my Windows VM. This isn't some slimmed down version of Windows either, it's a full fat W10 Pro install with a few tweaks applied to disable some of the crapware, that's it.

Pic related isn't even really "idle" either, there's shit like Slack in the background, work VPN software and so on. If I were to close everything it'd be even lower I guess.
