alcohol frees up something in the spirit that allows you to flow more smoothly. also reduces self consciousness
I can only read and write poetry when drunk because my sober mind resists poetry, which is bad. so it’s a crutch. I don’t think many of the great masters were alcoholics or drug addicts
because reality is disappointing and life is horrible and they want to both escape from and create a better world, or perhaps out of sheer desire

Holy hell I also only enjoy poetry while drunk.
A novel with several characters is impossible to follow but an ode to seagulls cresting above the waves of the sea is the perfect speed.
In addition to what the other anons said, I think there's a self harm aspect to it. It can feel empowering to treat your body like a toy when you've lost respect for it.
It makes you not care about consequences as much so you get more done and run wild with thoughts you might have quieted.
There are lots of romantic ways to describe alcohol and it's effects but I think that's it.
I wish I could say it's cooler to not drink but I'm no Spartan man who's in control of his life. I'm just glad I don't have hangovers anymore. Not that I do anything with the extra time.
I find it to mostly be an emotional crutch, though its a vice I've only really indulged in once. It allows emotions to flow much better for me, and I'm not subconsciously resisting my acknowledgment of being sad.
>get slightly drunk on a couple shots >put on some good music that you find may be inspiring or emotional >open up notepad or word >just start typing and let it come out
Anyone who has any slight interest in writing should try this at least once. At least to have the experience. It works like a charm.
There was no other drugs to take really, other than hashish in the mid to late 1800s.

Opium at the time was weak as hell, too. Of course they’d be drunk as frick most of the time. What are you defining alcoholism as? Social dysfunction and addiction? That’s a more modern medical meme. Also stop namegayging, Odysseus.
The term of art is "proof", on a scale from 0 to 200. So whatever the percentage is, you double it. You could rephrase your claim as "absinthe is about 140 proof".
Because they are trapped in their own heads.
All of these.

Most 20th Century American writers are not most writers
I might add most people in America were virtually alcoholics during the free decades when alcohol was prolific as cigarettes were
Most artists in the 19th century drank absinthe, dude.
That and wine. I know Lord Byron always had wine spritzers and white wine.
Drinking isn’t the same thing as alcoholism
