I print sparingly. Maybe once a month, and the original toner pack lasted me almost 10 years. I just replaced it recently. It still works perfectly.
yea, laser (actually led nowadays) printers make more sense if you don't print often, because inkjets require regular cleaning cycles to prevent ink drying in their heads, killing them, and this uses a bit of ink each time
toner on the other hand in a dry powder, so there's no regular maintenance cycles needed
