I've been thinking of doing this, especially to go to the beach, without my phone
I did. But the headphone jack port broke. I tried to fix it but somehow I made it even worse. I can't solder even if my life depended on it.
I just moved on to wireless and never looked back since.

I have a Fiio X1. Can't say I've really used it since getting a car. no rockbox support on these but it handles FLACs fine so not really bothered.
