I wonder what kind of person would learn German as a second language just to read Hegel. I liked my french translations of Kant and Schopenhauer tbf.

tbh Kant is worse, Hegel is harder to understand but at least his writing is exciting unlike Kant's eternal droning

Those were the days. Checking cheekyvids every week and being full of joy when you see a new video was added. My favourites are Border Runners 3 and Galaxy MM88. But Guardian of the Rune was definitively their magnum opus, I'm glad they ended it on a high note.

I'm gonna make the next witty comment and ask: Has Kant indeed ever properly translated at all?

If you fail to translate Kant properly, you're either an evil genius or an absolute moron who can't use a German dictionary at all.

Kant's german is technical and therefore understandable once you're initiated in the technical terminology. Hegel's german on the other hand is poetic and therefore inspired and can only be fully understand by someone equally inspired. Hegel "saw" things. If you haven't "seen" those things, then his words will refer to something which have no meaning to you, and his work will come across as schizobabble, as it does to most people. Hegel is actually as continuation of the spiritual side of the Platonic tradition. Hegelian philosophy, like Platonic philosophy, is a spiritual path where the thinking and reasoning part is only the means to the end which is direct experience of the invisible worlds through the development of a latent human faculty that is undeveloped in most people. The phenomenology of spirit is supposed to be like a ladder which you climb up to develop this faculty and reach a new standpoint. It is a ladder out of the cave. But only after you have completed the journey up the ladder and out of the cave will you actually be able to understand what has occurred. Hence, the Owl of Minerva takes flight at dawn.

good post. you can even see this in the translations. hegel usually speaks in round about analogies to get across an essense while Kant is either direct or uses very blunt analogies.

Kants words were meaningful, whereas Hegel's words were linguistic pilpul and schizobabble. Philosophy should transcend language and be universally understandable but some people would rather neurotically play with meanings of words all day and call that philosophy.
