Why can't linuxtards just come together to make one final version instead of having a bajillion distros? I understand that not everyone will get EXACTLY what they want, but it's better to focus efforts on making it as good as possible instead of time, energy, and effort being wasted on separate designs.

this is the fatal flaw of anything that's free and open source. When there's no profit motive, there's no motive to fully polish a product. Instead you just get 9 million branches off of the same plant.

I am happy because linux filters out any normoid that doesn't have an attention span longer than 5 minutes to learn a CLI.

Microsoft is getting fricked anyway by smartphone zoomers and as time goes on it gets worse with more and more centralization and subscriptions bullshit to push away customers.

that's true. if you point out a bad design decision to a DE dev he'll straight up just tell you to use something else or make your own DE. if a bunch of people stopped using their software overnight, it wouldn't make a bit of difference to the dev. there is no incentive to copy features from other DEs, because that's "their way", not "our way". so your only real solution is to trade one shitty DE for another DE that's shitty in some different way.

Why would you want to? with so many software combinations with different advantages/disadvantages. different distros try to offer different thing to different user at different proficiency levels. I would say personally let Endeavor OS be the one linux distro, however if you are a casual Ubuntu or Linux Mint user that might still be too hard. I remember having that very same fustration (for years) because the different distros use different software in their stack , a solution that works on one distro doesn't always work on another. This lead you to question why not have one main OS that uses the linux kernel? and as you learn more about how some distros work and the software that makes up it's stack you can have a better idea which software is failing and find solutions specific to that service or software. You would have to read up on your distro. On their site they are usually quick to tell which Desktop Environment (DE) is used, which user space (core-utils; usually gnu but sometimes busybox). If are running Xubuntu
and you KNOW that your DE is XFCE
and your window display errors out,
revealing it to be a DE error,
the fix you find online no longer would have to be Xubuntu specific for you to find it useful.
For the rest of us who don't want to dedicate our lives to learning Linux OSes (after all that isn't reasonable) I recommend Linux Mint it served me well for many years and Ubuntu forums solutions apply to it a good % of the time.

Haiku is basically this approach: Throw out all competitive notions and collaborate on a SINGLE end product. There will likely eventually be haiku forks, but haiku is intended to be unified. It's working out pretty well for it, aesthetically, imo.

Making a new distro is easy. You could fork Ubuntu, change the wallpaper and call it gaybuntu. In reality there are pretty much only as many different distros as there are different package managers. Every distro that uses the same package manager as something else is just the same shit with a different logo. You're drastically overestimating the duplicate efforts. People don't reinvent the wheel every day, they just paint it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

don't pretend like that's anything new. the bsds, promintently openbsd has always done this and delivers a polished single end product. open source doesn't suck, the troonix ecosystem does. my hate for linux devs is immeasurable after being immersed within the circus for years. the political woke stuff is only the tip of the iceberg

All the mainstream distros already have all the features that 99% of people will ever need. They are all already feature complete just in a different flavor. There is no need to focus on one "final version" because they are all final.
