    Because he was an uncle Bilal that gave his money to Arabs and Berbers that enslaved his race, and on stupid vanity projects and lavish living.

    His wealth was nothing more than a technicality
    >spawn next to gold mines
    >briefly become insidiously rich before a massive price correction occurs

    He was, what they call, "n-word rich". Blew his entire country's budget on hookers and new jordans.

    He probably wasn't even a real person. All the sources come from the 17th century. Just tall tales people liked to tell each other about shit in far away exotic places. "Oh there was a king in Africa and the streets were made out of gold and they had flying pyramids"

    Imagine you won the lottery, but the only store you could shop at was Walmart. It doesn't matter how much money you have if the only things available for you to spend it on are cheap crap. So what if you can buy a billion bottles of Mountain Dew?

      Shit analogy
      Mali isn't the Congo. He could easily have bought relevant stuff from the arab world to try and improve his shithole.

    He wasn't. All wealth estimates are pure cope and his gold wealth was in an era where gold's price was relative.

    The only real claim about his wealth is that he gave away so much gold in Cairo that he "caused an inflationary crisis", except that gold was never the standard for currency until the 19th century, silver was. And even then, Cairo had max 100k people at the time, all it would take is 1-2 pounds of gold ($60-120k today) to completely destabilize its value.

    This poem unironically works better for Mansa Musa than for an egyptian pharaoh:
    >I met a traveller from an antique land,
    >Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
    >Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
    >Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
    >And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
    >Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
    >Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
    >The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
    >And on the pedestal, these words appear:
    >My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
    >Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
    >Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
    >Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
    >The lone and level sands stretch far away
    -
    >By Percy Bysshe Shelley
    He wasted all of Mali's riches on vanity projects that ultimately did nothing for Mali, and it's modern day counterpart.
    At least we remember the egyptians in popular culure, ironically being the only thing from that continent we remember, and like, who remembers Mali nowadays?

    Because people's thoughts and mindsets about leadership and what a nation was were seemingly different back then. Basically, if you're a king or monarch, you own the entire land and everyone who lives in it is like you're employee by virtue of being born inside of what is effectively your big ass fricking store. If you don't need to invest in infrastructure, your martial forces, or your civil services to ensure that you, the monarch, get paid and stay in power (and can also sway your managers to stay aboard the team), why would you ever do it? The only thing you need to worry about once you've secured solid cash flow from the people within your borders is using some of that money to get other stores to work with you.
