Consuming thing A is absolutely delicious, comparable to sex, drugs, and the best food all rolled into one. Note that the 2 damage can't be undone by the 100 points of benefit. Meaning you definitely accumulate the 2 points of damage.
So what do you think would happen? Would people stop consuming thing A? We just established it's not actually "bad" for you -- just compare the 100 points of benefit with the 2 points of damage. But do you think it's nevertheless possible to overdo consuming it?
