Medieval "Christians" still had a pagan subconscious of warlike heroism but now with a unified cause to conquer for which of course made for a more effective army than whatever scattered tribes worshipped individual gods from village to village.
Protip: literally every aspect of Christianity you admire either comes from Greco-Roman philosophy or Germanic martial culture. The liberal humanism of modernity is the fruit of true Christianity.

Constantine literally only converted because the pagan priests refused to forgive him for boiling his wife alive. Christians would use "forgiveness" as a weapon again with Theodosius.

After the animal is purified by the priest, the principal wife sleeps near the horse and says: ‘O Horse, I extract the semen worth conception and you release the semen worth conception. The horse and principal wife spread two legs each. It's only now that Christian morality has finally taken root that you see them as problematic because spiritually you are no different from a feminist blogging about toxic masculinity.

That’s not true though. Vikings were literally not glorified until the late 19th century, idiot. Before then, the general view of Vikings was that expressed by John Milton

          > “Of all these terrible landings and devastations by the Danes, from the days of Ethelwolf till their two last battles with Ethelred, or of their Leaders, whether Kings, Dukes, or Earls, the Danish History of best credit saith nothing; So little wit or conscience it seems they had to leave any memory of their brutish, rather then manly actions.” - John Milton, History of Britain, 17th century

Glorification of Vikings is a very recent modern thing actually, so it seems the less Christian people have become over time, the more they have glorified Vikings.

This is a joke, right? Scandinavians were regarded so poorly by the rest of Europe in the 16th century (being seen as savage backwaters) that Arngrímur Jónsson felt the need to right a defence of his country.

          > Arngrímur Jónsson the Learned (Icelandic: Arngrímur Jónsson hinn lærði; 1568 – 27 June 1648) was an Icelandic scholar and a Christian apologist. His father was Jón Jónsson, who died in 1591.[1] Arngrímur studied in Copenhagen, completing his studies in 1589 and taking up a position back in Iceland as rector of the Latin school at the episcopal seat of Hólar in the same year.[2]

          > In 1593 he published Brevis commentarius de Islandia, a "Defense of Iceland" in Latin, in which he criticized the works of numerous authors who had written about the people and the country of Iceland. His main target was a poem by Gories Peerse, a merchant who had written an entertaining and somewhat slanderous poem about Icelandic geography and ethnography. Arngrímur also, however, criticized substantial works such as Cosmographia universalis of the German scholar Sebastian Münster.

Early Christianity was very syncretic with pagans. You could keep your gods and heroes so long as you called them saints, and placed the Christian god above them. You could even perform your rites and festivals if you could weave Jesus into it somehow. It's the root cause for all the bizarre heresies from Pelagianism to Gnosticism. All attempts to put the Christian/Pre-Christian split in the pre-Christian camp's favor.
Over time, of course, the church cracked down on all that, and Christianity simply started to perform ethnic cleansing like we seen with the Northern Crusades.
    in short, subversion.

      Anonymous

This, because it was a slower process rather than a flip of a switch there wasn't as much resistance. Plenty of Germanic warlords would perform both Pagan and Christian rituals, and there would be melding of imagery. Can't find it online but during a visit to the British Museum I saw a striking crucifix from Scandinavia that had Jesus depicted as wearing a helmet and holding a hammer, appearing as a blending of imagery of Jesus and Thor.

Pagan elites were really into christianity because it promised them a way to claim legitimacy above all other pagans, provide instant allies against other pagans, and also a group of people (the clergy) who were guaranteed to be loyal to them as long as they agreed to spread christianity.

  8. 2 years ago

Paganism in the Roman Empire was killed by Greek Philosophy, a lot of Eastern Religions like Mithraism, Manicheism, or Gnostic cults about Isis, were fashionable among Roman Elites who no longer believed in Greco Roman myths. Christianity is the eastern religion that won.

Christianity being peaceful individually isn't the same as being peaceful collectively. Christianity was never opposed to armies or militias or executioners existing, the gospels are very positive with regards to roman centurions, like Cornelius.

Early Christians literally behaved like modern stereotypes of israelites. They were subversive, spreading Christianity by targeting slaves and the poor, while trying to serve in noble houses in order to groom the children without the parents knowledge. Just as the Middle Ages had Court israelites, Roman households had House Christians who would seek to subvert the whole family. It wasn't until Constantine made Christianity the state religion that Christianity syncretized with paganism and Sol Invictus that it became a martial force.

        >They were subversive, spreading Christianity by targeting slaves and the poor, while trying to serve in noble houses in order to groom the children without the parents knowledge
They were trying to convert everyone they met. The end-game of Christianity is 100% of the world's population following Christ and that's been very clear to all from day 1. It's just that the poor were more receptive and more readily received it. When you've converted all you can in the lower classes, the only place to go is up.
Wealthy European nobility having a court israelite to allow them to be even greedier is in no way comparable with a Roman family employing a servant or owning a slave who did not have to be a Christian and whose religion plays no part in their role. A court israelite must be israeli in order to practice usury and is employed based on his religion alone.

That’s unfair. Lithuania has won at least one noble prize in chemistry. Although the guy who won it was a israelite. Latvia has also won one noble prize in chemistry in 1909 although the guy who won it was a Baltic German, but that still must count.

And of course there’s Baltic literature like the….anyway.

As for inventions what about a device that helps people commit mass suicide?

          > The Euthanasia Coaster is a hypothetical steel roller coaster designed as a euthanasia device to kill its passengers.[1] The concept was conceived in 2010 and made into a scale model by Lithuanian artist Julijonas Urbonas, a PhD candidate at the Royal College of Art in London. Urbonas, who has experience as an amusement park employee, stated that the goal of his concept roller coaster is to take lives "with elegance and euphoria".[2] As for practical applications of his design, Urbonas mentioned "euthanasia" or "execution".[3] John Allen, who served as president of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, inspired Urbonas with his description of the "ultimate" roller coaster as one that "sends out 24 people and they all come back dead".

          That’s something, right?

I mean wouldn’t that be a given anyway, considering most people have Charlemagne as their ancestor?
