Japs deserved it, China was supposed to be open for business and not monopolized by any single Power. In particular the Brits had been working hard to build trade ties with China since the 1830s and the Japanese expected them to accept Japan pulling a Monroe Doctrine on the largest market in the world, this was unrealistic.

            >China was supposed to be open for business
Why so? Japan had a pretty good retort to USA and Britain. If they'd open up the South American and colonial markets to Japan, then Japan would pull out of China.
Can you guess what their reply to that was?

The Dutch, British, French, etc. were undoubtedly more civilized than the Japanese. The Chinese were arguably no more civilized but that's beside the point.

China in the 19th century was just an arrogant, decadent empire like Iran or the Ottomans. If managed correctly, they might have adapted to their reduced stature in the world. The European powers and America nominally respected China's sovereignty so as not to provoke them too much so the good times could keep rolling for all the Western powers and they could keep their trading privileges and concessions, and China would gradually become more developed but in a way that didn't threaten the West.

The Japanese overturned this pleasant state of affairs by openly torturing and butchering Chinese in their hundreds of thousands and by their unveiled shredding of China's sovereign status.

Basically, Japan's bungling is ultimately responsible for the surge in Chinese nativism and nationalism after 1949, the end of the Open Door, the destruction of the concession system and the taking of Macau and Hong Kong. And not just because they provoked a surge in Chinese nationalism, but also by destroying Western prestige in Asia during their conquests both in China and Southeast Asia, the vacuum of power left behind in their retreat from SE Asia and China between 1943 and 1945 could not be refilled by Europeans.

To be fair, Nazi Germany is also partly to blame for this process, less in East Asia particularly but moreso in Africa, although their weakening of the European imperial powers at home also played a role in destroying their authority in Asia, too.

They were barely "allies" and the Japs in particular were constantly stepping on the Germans' toes like making separate nonaggression pacts with the Soviets and seizing Vichy French controlled colonies. The Russian view of WWII as several separate wars that happened to be occurring simultaneously at times is the more correct one I think.
