    >you tell your local KGB department to disperse the crowd
    >the local KGB department consisting mostly of Latvians tells you to frick off
    >it sparks the chain reaction of local authorities' disobedience and you either end up using the army which can lead to a literal war or accept the rapid secession of the Baltics and probably the rest of the Union
    Or
    >you tell your local KGB department to disperse the crowd
    >they do so, sometimes brutally
    >the whole world sees you squash a peaceful demonstration for solidarity and self-determination
    >"Mr. Gorbachev, but you told us you were going to democratise the country, what is this? Were you lying this whole time? Guess we're back in the Cold War now"

      >literal war
What would Latvians do? They're a tiny people in a tiny country with a huge Russian minority, they would've been crushed in 3 days (unironically). Gorbachev was a CIA stooge

War would have been a huge PR disaster, other republics would definitely have asked "wtf?" and gone their own way. Like in Yugoslavia practically.

The soviet just got out of the Afghan War, and you wanted them to crush some of their "own" people ?

if anything, you are the CIA agent.

        >Gorbachev was a CIA stooge
Great Man Theory once again BTFOing historical materialism kek
All it took was one single agent!

Marxist history is all about great man theory. Stalin single handily ruined the USSR, or Cruchev single handily ruined stalins legacy, if Rosa hadn't been shot the revolution would have succeeded, gorbachev was solely responsible for the USSR collapsing and so on

China did Tiananmen square the same year without too much blowback.

The problem was that by that time the whole country was in turmoil, riots and ethnic clashes became a regular thing. Sometimes the Soviets did try to use the army to quell them and every time it backfired, damaging the already low reputation of the central government even further. People on Tiananmen were a bunch of students who wanted more liberal reforms; people in the Baltics were whole nations who wanted to leave the USSR (they had a right to do so according to the Soviet constitution, so denying them that right looked bad both for foreigners and their own citizens).

the truth is that Soviet Union was weak, and its resources thinned out over a territory too large to be controlled with a centralized government that it had. Afghanistan war had taken its economic toll, Chernobyl happened just a few years ago, and suppression of people like in Prague Spring would be a huge PR disaster. Balts saw the writing on the wall that SU was crumbling from its seams and used it to peacefully liberate themselves from this mess. like how do you have food shortages when also you have the largest agrarian land coverage in the world? Soviet Union was so mismanaged that just like a crappy run business the collapse was inevitable.

try 80s, it's not like people were starving, but more like you have to wait for hours in a half empty shop in a line to get handed out a stale bread and 1/5th of a sausage and you will be happy or else. if society is run down to that level, a collapse is inevitable.

the baltic states are really nice places today, at least Latvia and Estonia are, I'm glad they got independence.
And at the time nationalist russians were glad about it because they were getting rid of the leeching outer regions

there were 2 million ppl in that line
there are no places to take them
dictatures, authorithans and so cannot exist with the silence of the majority
you cannot execute half of your own population if the the other half does not sit idle
violence is a 2 way street, you can hit but others might hit back
when millions of ppl tells you to frick off, you have to frick off, or there will be war you cannot win
and no you dont need some stupid amendment for this, or the population to have an arsenal
