Why do we read so many alcoholic and druggie authors? Where are the people that are well-adjusted and healthy with good outlooks on life? Recs?

take the eastern lit pill
It’s just Mormons and Baptists
They’re about as entertaining as plant life
As a plant biologist I find this statement offensive
Name one alcoholic writer
Pic rel (Flann O'Brien)
He's just Irish
Nah he was always blackout drunk by the time the pubs closed and that wasn't considered normal by his Irish friends
>by the time the pubs closed
That's what made him abnormal and it was more he went home before they closed. He's not a particularly bad drunk compared to most his friends. Kavanagh was a worse one. Flann was weird and drinking, but he wasn't drinking more than most.
If you're going by would taking alcohol off them cause shakes, all the ones accusing him of being an alcoholic would pass the same test.
Still an alcoholic just not as far gone as others. That's not surprising though because anything can always be worse. I'm looking for someone who lived what most people can agree is a good life mostly free of bad habits rather than debating whether getting black out drunk most nights is too far or not.
Bukowski
Hemingway
F. Scott Fitzgerald
Hegel had a happy marriage, stable job, and a family, and look what that resulted in...
Who is we,i think most of the books ive read werent written by degenerate but i dont really know how the authors ive read lived.
Healthy and well adjusted people don't make great art, simple as that.
The drive to create art is somehow linked to being an utter degenerate and narcissist.
So the happy well adjusted man feels no drive to create art but the smack addict with an ego bigger than the sun does.
Surely there are normal people that wrote good literature. I'm not really familiar with his life but I think Murakami is one.
Wallace Stevens
If we're talking Irish lit then the obvious ones are Seamus Heaney and William Trevor
>sober
>long happy marriages
>no scandal
>decades of steady productivity
What do you recommend by William Trevor?
"Health" and "well adjusted" are abstract terms that are meaningless. Every perspective is necessary for the Watcher's eye, and we must all play our parts.
