I have 16 and it is more than enough for me, coding doesn't need that much and gaming too, last game I played was Jedi: Fallen Order and worked perfect.
32 gigahomies are overkill except you are doing much 3d rendering or video editing.

I have 128gb 3200mhz ram in my laptop to just make it a non-issue. RAM isn't expensive, might as well load up.

My 2014 PC has in fact 16 GB DDR3 and my 2020 PC has 32 GB DDR4 merely because of the expected DDR5 generation gap and because I got it reasonably cheap.

unironically I need 32gb (on 16gb rn) because my work has me doing ML shit with like four different browsers open at once.
I also like to have TF2 open all the time so I can pop into Uncletopia (ily Uncle Dane) randomly to get market gardens. I cannot do this because having TF2 open while working will sometimes crash my desktop due to lack of RAM.

Because just having everything I need for work open idle is already using close to 15GB of ram. That's without factoring in what the OS, web browsers, and other programs I like to have open need.

I do music production, compile software and keep a comical amount of tabs open. all of those (especially music plugins) consume a decent chunk of ram and I've hit the pagefile on 16 GB before.
I'm at 128GB ECC now because work let me take that much from the PC Closet

I use 4 screens with an iGPU while virtualising, 32gb is about perfect. I fell for the 64gb meme earlier though and lost a lot of value for no good reason.

By the time I need 64gb I will want a new laptop for other reasons, especially I/O standard improvements and efficiency improvements. I want to use a large 8k monitor

I use Win7 and Opera and I'm running daily 60+ or 120+ tabs on just 4GB of 800mhz RAM.

You still need 64GB if you want to do serious shit like Blender and Maya.

32gb and it is barely cutting it. If the IMCs and the mobo topology implementation were not so bad in both intel and amd ddr4 platforms i would jump to 64gb in a heartbeat. Hopefully they ll get their shit together in the next 1-2 years(z690 is atrocious in driving even dual channel ddr5-disgusting latency even at loosely tuned "xmp" profiles) and x670 looks like a no go too(daisy chain and the notorius AMD imc problems, hopefully i am proven wrong on this one though). Cope more applehomosexuals.

Simple; my board supported that much so I was like what the hell. (DDR3). Guess I did good cause this was back in 2014 and as of today no HP/Dell/etc systems come with 32GB as the default config even though it's been uh 8 years. I used to use 4GB due to the windows xp limitation and board limit at the time. Then I upgraded the board and moved to windows 7. Busted that ram limit good and proper.
