because the march of scientific progress has rendered this kind of armchair philosophy completely and eternally pointless

      >march of scientific progress
The march right into corporate and ideological funding?

            >Gob halpded me
That God didn't, it was really the God Mars Faunus who helped you. Prove me wrong, unverifiable assertion maker ;D

Why does this quote reek of midwit sophistry?

It's a correct logical hypothesis that demonstrates there can be no God; it's circular because it's conveying the illogic of the person making each claim.

Christians having their beliefs feedback to them and saying "that's fricking crazy," is still funny to me.

            Uh but I always found problems with this 'quote' from Epicurus and doubt its validity;
            1) Jupiter/Zeus is determined to be malevolent to humans (for reasoning not dissimilar or unlike yabas reasoning with original sin)
            and
            2) he wouldn't call it God (singular)
i.e. Epicurus is speaking as if he's a medieval scholar living under christianity or islam or at some point and place, anyway, where the notion of "god is good" existed.

Has to be a fake quote.

To give him the benefit of the doubt he wasn't writing about the Christian God so the argument works for the pagan gods he is talking about.

    >Why does this quote reek of midwit sophistry?

Because every midwit and teenaged atheist re-invents the problem of evil then tells themselves that they're a clever and original thinker. But they're not. It's the opposite. They're ignorant and stupid.

Literally none of them know that the Greeks were discussing this problem thousands of years ago, or that there is an entire book in the old testament that tells you what the solution to the problem of evil is, or that several European philosophers have written books in which they explain other solutions to the problem of evil (e.g. Leibniz's Theodicy).

Very little in philosophy ever gets debunked. There are responses to theodicies and theodicies to responses and so on.

      >what the solution to the problem of evil is
What's that, then? Oh, I know, I'm to cut off my penis and begin bowing to a israelite in hopes that count chocola will reward my slavishness after I die.

my issue with this quote is that everyone assumes it's critiquing the Christian God but Christianity didn't exist in his time. was he talking about Zeus? some other god?
are we sure it's even a real quote?

well he could have been talking to hebrews or egyptian atenites, and so debunks simple judaism for goys before it even begins.

i think it's obviously supposed to be taken in the context of people dedicating their lives to flattering 'any' god in the hope that the god will grant them some reward.
