Why hasn't an open source dating app taken off?

Why hasn't an open source dating app taken off? Almost all the well-known ones are owned by Match Group. All of them have become increasingly shitty with intrusive prompts for paid upgrades, removal of useful features and addition of annoying useless features.
What would it take for a FOSS dating platform to reach a level of success comparable to something like Signal - i.e. not the dominant app in its field but with an active userbase of respectable size?

Why would you want to talk one-on-one with literal random strangers?

Because I'm not an incel. I like to meet people and get laid.

you need funding to get it popular in the beginning and create network effect.
thats all that matters. all these companies did that and now they're feasting on the suckers.
advertising, branding, shilling, sponsorships, finding influencers, writing copywrite.

I've never used a dating app, what features should it have?

view users, sort by city - sort by activity, view pictures, read bio, send messages, read messages

A big one is the ability to filter the profiles being shown to you. I would pay for Tinder if it let me block profiles based on keywords to filter out all the boring fricking normies.
OkCupid offers some filtering but the userbase is worse than Tinder. They also dumbed down and removed a bunch of filtering options a couple of years ago. There's no point to using OkCupid over Tinder anymore.

I'm in Melbourne where we have had the longest cumulative lockdown time in the world. For the past three months dating apps have unironically been one of the only ways to meet new people.

Where do you go out to meet people? I’m not looking for casual sex and I don’t drink, so bars/clubs wouldn’t make sense, but I can’t think of anywhere else.

Why would someone do that? Dating apps are so fricking profitable, why would I make a free one, while I can make yet another paid one?

      Just to frick with people.
Imagine being the demise of a billion dollar industry.
You'd probably put the roastie prostitutedom into high gear, but who gives a frick, you'll be remembered forever.

Because any open source app will require you to host your own server or some shit and all I want is something to sign in for five minutes, swipe a little bit, then go frick.

Whatever dating apps have women is the good dating app. Tinder is bad, but it has the women.

No one cares about open source technology outside of IT. IT is predominately male. No one wants a dating app that is a sausage fest.

The ideas of FOSS don't apply the same way in platforms, since they are being ran on a server. How would that server infrastructure get funded?

Tried 4 or 5 the past 2 years, I only try them for 3-4 days then get a refund, talk to 5-6 girls each time and always end up with one of them for few months, it takes a long time because if the relationship doesn't work for longer I want to be few months alone.

Tinder has shallow standards, if you're older use something like Hinge, best one by far is Bumble. I hate those fricking apps but you can make it fun, be a little more picky with age, religion, politics etc.

Forgot, if you have Facebook, its dating App is actually good, it's like a completely free Tinder but more serious like Hinge, Bumble is still better.

    >Hey you just have to download this thing on your Samsung called F-Droid, refresh the repos, then download 'FOSSDate'. If you have an iPhone (blue bubble <3) you need to use the online version at fossdate.io because there is no app

You will have nothing but autists and trannies on your platform.
