honestly it because the "Graveyard of empires" is anglo propaganda to pay themselves on the back for losing there. if you go further back in history you run into a lot of contradictions like multiple empires having the region that is currently Afghanistan as their core territory or that region being a productive loyal part of some empires for centuries.

Because Afghanistan is not actually a "country" in the traditional sense of the term, it's a random geographical area populated by tribes

Because Afghanistan was past the hinterlands of all of the nations in that image and beyond the British Empire there would be no way to "defeat" it without permanent occupation, which is impossible in the post-imperial era. The British were too financially involved in India to waste even more money annexing Afghanistan when they were never even committed to the idea of that in the first place to avoid conflict with Russia, the USSR didn't elect to try and incorporate it as an SSR after the Saur Revolution because that could have turned into a regional disaster, and the US is way too far from Afghanistan + there is no large regional bloc of US allies in the area to incorporate Afghanistan into which made the invasion doomed in the long term because of the financial costs of doing literally anything with it. The best thing to do with Afghanistan is to just leave it the frick alone because it isn't worth it economically.

    >1: Territory.
Afghanistan is basically custom built for insurgency. Even with all the high tech and trillions of dollars modern day NATO could pour into the conflict (not to mention mens lives) it is impossible to keep the boot on their necks.

    >2: The People
I'm sure that some of the reports are squaddies talking shit, but some of them aren't, and the Afghans were basically born to fight. Outside of maybe some uncontacted tribes hidden away in the darker parts of Amazonia they are maybe the last born warriors on the planet.

    >3: The Empires
Empires are, traditionally, unwilling to accept circumstances, losses, and scenarios that don't pander to their (often dramatically overhyped) self images. So when they meet a country that won't just lie down and say uncle they get butthurt and start regarding it as a calamitous defeat.

      >Afghans were basically born to fight
This is certainly true. In every country with a significant Afghan diaspora, they are known for constantly getting in brawls and solving problems with immediate violence. Here in London the Pakis live in fear of Pashtuns.

Graveyard implies that’s where they go to die, but the Anglo-Afghan wars didn’t kill the British Empire. It persisted for decades in a very powerful form. WW2 killed the British empire. It remains to be seen if America dies anytime soon, but probably not.

I suppose that in the current geopolitical climate you cannot conquer Afghanistan.
As you'd need to commit atrocities on a scale not seen since the Cultural Revolution

the Soviet Union invaded at the worst time, when a plethora of Guerilla weapons were floating around thanks largely to themselves, but before night vision was really good and possible to give to every infantryman.

Also before a lot of advances for surviving anti tank mines and IEDs were implemented.

Nobody wanted to keep it. Its remote enough that it can and should be ignored, and to defeat the people you have to control the borders....this is hard.

The US/NATO empowered the Northern Alliance which were mostly non-Pashtun minorities so of course they'd always be in conflict with the Pashtun majority Taliban in the Pashtun majority country. They should've reinstated the Monarchy and left after killing Osama.

Most of the afghan vs anyone wars go like that. They suck at it. They are always being invaded and are just resilent.

The soviet afghan war ended with 160.000 dead afghan mujahedeen and over 2 million dead civilians.

All wars afghans get involved into end with them being slaugthered en masse and whatever power on the other side just fricking off because its not worth it.
