Gnome has a well-defined HIG and an active design team who create mockups they discuss for months of most core applications which are then actually implemented. I like KDE, but this is something that is far less present with them and definitely something they could improve.
If bad UI/UX is the price to make Wayland happen, I would pay it.
Most of the issues with wayland core protocols and stuff are result of GNOME devs being autistic and slow.

XFCE's Thunar with the Greybird theme and Hedera icon pack look great to me.
Gnome's nautilus also looks good, but it has way too much padding like all the rest of gnome.
pcman looks good too, but I think this font isn't the best choice.
the accent color on the "File Edit View" menu and pathbar look terrible.
