It is not that they caused poorharvests, rather than poor harvest usually lead to an influx of unemployed people in the cities and because people were using likely imported slaves as their servants instead of hiring the unemployed locals fleeing the bad harvests the unemployed were falling into idleness instead of becoming servants.
The idea is that the solution to poor harvests would be to hire the locals, but if you used imported servants that means of poor relief could no longer exist.

Probably because today (and I think since like the 1950s really) American news, history and politics has been exported around the world to the point that other countries know far more about america then America about them and even today political talking points in other countries is influenced by American problems making people complain about things not even relevant to their country only really America. There was an article on this showing a perfect example of this but now I can’t find. It was basically saying USA politics and the media around it has effected the UK so much that British politicians have copied trump in how he acts. But more importantly people started acting as if blacks in the UK have the same exact problems and experience as the USA even though it simply isn’t the case and they have it much better there. (I think the most marginalized group in the UK is Gypsies anyway, but idk that could just be a meme.)
To be fair for this latter point though I think the article was written after the Black Lives Matter stuff so that’s when USA politics was at its most relevant but even then it’s kinda crazy and shows how much influence America has on the rest of the world.
