        >the shoguns ape out and kill all the Christians
        And that's basically it.

Wrong. That is a very small part of it. Japan largely didn't fear foreign invasion at all in the 1500s, convinced they were of their own superiority. They even threatened Spain in the Philippines with Invasion in the 1590s.

Christianity was banned in Japan largely because the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa shogunates obsession with centralization and conservative Japanese society saw it as a threat to harmony in Japan. For starters, it delegitimizes the power of the Jap Emperor, who is understood as chosen by the gods, by virtue Christianity being an intolerant foreign religion that says there's only 1 God, and Jesus is his son (and also him). Delegitimize the Emperor = Delegitimize the Shogun.

For another, Christians are known to cause disputes wherever they go to Japan, either by starting it themselves or by their simple very presence annoying local cults & existing Buddhist sects.

Finally and perhaps more importantly, Christianity is seen as a threat to government centralization. The Toyotomi and the Tokugawa (partly correctly since it happened to the Oda and the Otomo) knew that Christian Missionaries built ties between peripheral Daimyo & the outside world. Ties that Daimyo could use to amass wealth (especially from China and Spanish Philippines, who both paid in silver), foreign technology, and use this wealth & tech to challenge Central Authority. In a time when the Toyotomi and the Tokugawa believed in Neoconfucian ideals of total centralization of the state under a single authority for the harmony of all, foreign-trading Daimyos with pet Jesuits and Christian inclinations were seen as a threat.

Hence why the Toyotomi banned Christian Missionaries in Japan and kept existing Christian Daimyo in a tight leash, while Tokugawa went further and banned Christianity altogether from Japan, and limited Foreign Trade & Interaction in Shogunate-sanctioned ports where all revenues and new tech went directly to the Shogun.

You are forgetting the part where southern daimyos were converting and massacring Buddhists who wouldn't convert by the thousands under the instigation of missionaries. Or the fact that the missionaries actively did not trust their congregants or disciples and never let their students advance to the rank of iruman (priest). Nor would they tell them anything about Europe or European history, or European knowledge, and wouldn't let them read anything besides catechisms and aesop in latin. They literally told people that Europe was like a paradise ruled by the Church because their God was true and loved them.
They didn't want Adams to get to the shogun not because they thought he would lie but because they thought he would the truth. Irrc the first meeting the shogun asked about Europe and Adams told him about the war with the Spanish and the different forms of Christianity and the very next day the shogun declared Catholicism a heretical and depraved faith.

    >Why wasn't Christianity a big deal in Japan?

Because dogmatism isn't the norm among Religions in East Asia. Christcuckoldry is a Dogmatic faith that demands its followers to follow it and only it, disregarding local realities and spiritual beliefs. The very "native" religions that East Asians follow are themselves not dogmatic and are very syncretic, why should Christianity be special?

Even East Asian """"""""""Christians""""""""""""" are heavy into Syncretism to the point that Christianity becomes a different, polytheistic, religion.

The Lord turned them around. You then have issues like Japan joining the axis powers in ww2.
General Patton was discriminated against notoriously because he wasn’t politically correct. He would say let’s go kill them damn Germans. The other ally powers like England and others would be like no no sir we need to wait and like bury the dead and say we won this battle and do all this things and General Patton would be like hell no we are going to pursue the Germans until we win and they are all dead. When the Russians helped sandwich them at the end of the war, Patton said shoot, they are all communists, I’m gonna just go to war with them now and win against the communists. He told the guy to go tell the Russians that they are a son of a b***h, and said to tell him every single word, to which he was reluctant to pass the message but did and the Russian guy responded well tell Patton he is a son of a b***h , too. So Patton said I’ll drink to that.
He is said to get out there in his army jeep with his pistol and start shooting ar German planes flying over and goin Damn Germans and trained his men for doing very tough missions that the other generals completely backed down from, believing it to be an impossible task.

A good book if you want to read about it is Deus Destroyed, which is about the mission to Japan and why it failed.
One of the reasons was that initially missionaries were distrustful at worst and frustrated at best with Japanese people and Japanese customs. They wouldn't let Japanese converts, no matter how zealous, become a priest themselves which severely hampered their growth. The guy who first headed the mission also thought Japanese language was impenetrable so he didn't bother having any of his students learn it academically. So for the first ten years or so of the mission it was underfunded, didn't care to integrate with Japanese culture, and saw itself as doomed until that guy was replaced with someone with more enthusiasm.

    From: Matthew 13
    >18 “Therefore hear the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside. 20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. 22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. 23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
There is no neutrality to the gospel, you are for it or against it. Buddhists and Shintoists had a grip on Japanese culture. The Christians came with a message that was hard to swallow, that these nature spirits and buddhas that were being worshipped were in fact demonic. Tokugawa emerged the victor after a prolonged civil war and set about removing all Western influence, which he saw as a threat to unity. He chose the Buddhists to help him carry out this purge, as well as assist him in carrying out a census and spying on potential political rivals. This eventually backfired in Buddhists temples being burned in the Meiji Restoration, and Christianity being allowed back in. Why have Japanese seemingly resisted conversion efforts? In short they in a stony place that punishes non-conformity and a thorny place in that they have a high-trust, high performance society that provides tremendous material comforts. Their hard-working, moral culture that mostly aligns with the Good, the Beautiful, and the True already. Thus are mostly in alignment with how God intends us to live. So judgment maybe slower in coming.

That’s a dumb answer. The japanese/Chinese/Koreans/Taiwanese/etc that don’t align with Israel, are the ones making dumb video games, while the ones that do write amazing works of art that become our childhood fantasies in history. Like Nintendo and FROM. Granted, not all their video games succeed, like Dark Souls 2 had terrible enemy design and trannies, and Dark Souls 1 was the worst PC Port with horrible mouse and keyboard controls and weird cult covenants that led to the trannies in 2. 3 is still the superior Dark Souls, and Elden Ring went back to using 2’s enemy design with bad hit boxes and action and physics and more focus on dexterity (deception). It’s always the deceivers which ruin our games, and the ones like old Nintendo that used to put the crosses and the churches on the games that had the best Zelda legends to play. The ones now where they really want to have beast races instead of humans were always more attempts at furry porn and ruining stories like Jonah and the Whale with the addition of Dolphin e-girl dicky.
