I turn autorotate off, I turn it to the side, a fourth softkey appears with a rotate icon. Wow, just wow.

Also the real reason is because when it rotates, it basically redraws the whole activity which can be buggy or slow.

makes no difference. some software completely ignores the system setting and does whatever the frick it wants.
Because its a shit feature, if I turn my phone and I want it to rotate I can press the little bottom corner icon when it shows up.

It was okay back then because only a few things even used it but after android honeycomb everything supported it so now every turns. Also gyros are inaccurate these days, you can't even calibrate it in most phones now, no animation for the screen rotation either.
