I'm still using a kindle touch from 2011 to read books, and I have no desire to upgrade. I can't imagine spending $120 on a ereader in current year.

I bought the ad supported version on sale and hacked it to not show ads, and I have never purchased a digital book from amazon. That part's not super relevant, but I like to brag about it.

I looked into hacking it some time ago from posts on MobileRead, but I don't really see the point outside of better epub support (calibre already automatically converts epubs to the native kindle format) and gimmicky features like ssh'ing into the kindle and being able to run a terminal.

        >The battery is almost dead but other than that it's perfectly fine
If you're willing to crack it open to see the specs of the battery, you could probably find a replacement really easily from AliExpress. Older Kindles use pretty standard batteries (with no serialization), and there's typically a lot of space inside the device if you only find ones that are larger than OEM.

        [...]
This is true, my kindle treats PDFs like images where you either view the entire page at once (typically making text so small you can't read it) or zoom into the page and only view a portion of it at a time.
I've just resorted to finding epub versions for whatever books I want to read and using those instead (and loading them with Calibre).

kindle is ok for PDFs with koreader. in fact koreader is pretty much the most best PDF reader I've ever used, I wish there was a standalone PDF program that worked as well as koreader, with the page cropping and annotation options, it's kinda sad how shitty other PDF readers are in comparison

you can convert pdf to EPUB or MOBI formats super fricking easily. so it's perfectly apt for PDFs, you just don't know shit because you are moronic.

i've had a kindle4 that i got for 10 bucks at goodwill for the last 9 years. it's like 40 books that fits in my back pocket, battery lasts for weeks. i convert formats, can edit books and shit so if i want to save some space i can take out the introductory or postword parts of books that i won't be needing, etc, make my own table of contents, whatever i want.

works on my machine, i use that and calibre pretty much exclusively. my only gripe with it is that it takes awhile to convert, especially bigger PDFs. how well it works for you really depends on what settings you choose for your needs. my first couple tries came out kinda messed up but once you get some configs made, it's just press convert and go afk. i'm not a shill but this program was a game changer.

if you really want pdf's on something less than A4 size you use koreader and enable reflowing, koreader works on all jailbreakable kindles since the kindle 2

Reflowing should be a last resort. Cropping and segmentizing should be the first.
          Top->Bottom or 1->3->2->4 can help a lot.
On the converse, using double pages is a good approach when the text is too big.
I'll often combine cropping margins with double pages to get the most out of it.

            >based beyond belief
But you're right about the screen size. I can't (comfortably) read anything aside from epubs on this tiny screen. And even those I'd prefer to read at a similar or larger font size, wider margins but still enough screen space to display 100 chars. On the other hand these tiny ereaders are super portable and I carry them with me all the time in my coat, jacket or hoodie. This reminds me of that fastman meme on IQfy.

Now I realize that an ereader with a lid, kinda like a laptop but with 2 screens instead of a keyboard would make a lot of sense. Display 2 pages at once, or take notes on one of the displays. It'd also be just as portable as a normal 6 inch ereader because you could just close it. The thin device meme would finally make sense in this case since you don't need monster specs or a huge battery for an ereader.

A front light. The epub support is probably better as well. Note taking isn't really that good though.

I want to read books and take notes. Should I get the remarkable 2 or supernote? Or something else? I have no intention of using any cloud shit if that matters.

The real alternative is Boox Note Air 3/3C.
Remarkable 2 is outclassed by Supernote and Boox nowadays. Overall it's going to depend on what you are looking for.

            Anonymous

Interesting. What are the strengths of each then? That book note air 3 looks promising, especially the color version if it is any good.

            Anonymous

Supernote is for people looking for a specialized device. Out of the box you get a usable device that doesn't get in your way.
Boox is aiming to create a full fledged tablet environment. You need to get used to a lot of things and some options are confusing or hidden but when you master it, it's extremely versatile.
The problem with the color version is that it sacrifice a lot of battery life for the option to reduce ghosting and currently there's no way to disable it.

What if I don't want a full fledged tablet environment though? I suppose supernote might be more of my thing, but now that I look at the specs, the lack of a front light is a real downside.

Yep, you will have remorse (on the BW anyway) The sleep screen doesn't look at all like this with the nice border etc. No built in rotation so frick you if you want to hold this uncomfortable thing in landscape. At this stage mods dont fully work. Nickelmenu can be installed but is tweaks to allow rotation dont work properly; (it rotates the image but not the touchscreen, so you have to touch the screen (mirrored and flipped position) relative to where the gui button is. Koreader not working at this stage. My first eReader and frankly I'm a little pissed that kobo puts so little effort into their software. The device is clearly capable of doing more. It COULD be fantastic, but its just meh. Also - shitload of analytics that I don't know how to disable. Someone needs to write a full custom firmware for this thing. Image quality is great, and much much faster than the 2e which it replaces.

    >Not a Libra 2 aka not able to mod it with a 256GB SD card
    >Not a Forma aka the best screen size for manga and print books
Any other Kobo product is shit, especially the Libra Color with it's dim low contrast display. Forma's only drawbacks are the micro usb (solved by using a magnetic cable) and 8GB storage (32GB model is extinct). Libra 2 solves both of those flaws, but you have to cope with a screen that's JUST the minimum size for comfortable reading. Forma's 8" is perfect, absolutely rocks like wieners.
