the autistic parroting of "when windows 10 hits EOL I'll switch to Linux" is already happening and it's hilarious to know that they will in fact not switch to linux and theyll upgrade to Win11. Happens with every version of windows, and I'm saying this as someone running a chinkpad with Linux on it. Shit is hilarious.

      Anonymous

I switched to Debian after XP's EOL, been using it since.

I literally can't switch to Linux because I need Excel.
I might just bit the bullet and buy a Mac though.

so why not just excell it in a VM?

          Anonymous

Why would I bother with a VM? Reduced performance and battery life don't sound convenient.

            Anonymous

            yeah agreed.

so why not just excell it in a VM?

is moronic. A lot of linux ppl I have noticed scream about VM's but they've never actually used one for work - let alone have a job. Not even trying to be mean but that's the way it is. You do not want any type of interference for a work application or system because of something as stupid as running it in a VM - it's not worth the hassle and can cause a lot of issues.
Personally I would take MacOS over windows any day. The only thing windows does better in my opinion is gaming and I don't even do that anyways. Once I started working from home I wiped Linux off of my desktop and have to use Windows but I don't really care. I have Linux on my laptop and for other things it's more than fine.

Can't you use the web browser based excel?

Maybe when they're not fighting every day about a fricking display server they can get something done

        Anonymous

there's really less fighting that it seems. there's a really vocal minority of wayland-obsessed gnome-obsessed people screaming about how it's unacceptable that X still exists in any form in current-year, even though their meme trash doesn't even run on well over 50% of computers, and the rest of us who just use X because it works well.
just ignore "fighting" it's all just attention prostitutes trying to be the next big thing. read wikis and compatibility tables for the reality if you're curious, otherwise just go with what arch wiki suggests, they're usually pretty clear.

          Anonymous

All I see around here is threads b***hing about Wayland though

            Anonymous

IQfy - and IQfy in general - is filled with the vocal minority. there's at least one mentally ill person here who has associated the wayland spec with transexuals for some reason and goes on some moral crusade against it. but half the time i think the "anti [thing]" threads are created by [thing] snobs themselves as a vehicle for attacking others and giving the appearance of having "owned" the "other side".
when making decisions about technology, never trust the end decision to some noisy shithole like this. it's full of mental illness and shitty takes. read the wiki and decide for yourself, or go with the defaults. you're not missing out on anything.

i switched when support for 7 ended and have been happy as a clam. i now run win 10 in a gpu-passthrough virtual machine as-needed for gaming, but with all the proton/deck business, that's become less and less necessary.. it kind of sits idle or off most of the time. all my important stuff is fine in linux either natively or with compatibility layers like wine.

with nu-windows splitting everything into multiple different (yet all uniquely shitty) menus and control panels, forcing updates, still having abysmally slow as frick file indexing, still not having file explorer tabs, forcing onedrive horseshit on me constantly, and having the dumbest fricking search function i've ever used, it sure feels like this hunk of shit OS is wasting my time very often

I don't play video games anymore, so I dropped Windows and moved on to Linux.
What does Win 11 have over Win 10? Like Win 10 pushed directx 12 and forced the vast majority to drop 7.

      Anonymous

      >What does Win 11 have over Win 10?
nothing. the usual windows upgrade """perks""". new file copy dialogs, new system dialogs, another layer of control panel, a centered start bar. and about 69,000 new bugs you're acting as unofficial, unpaid field QA for.
DX12 was the biggest legitimate reason to go from 7 to 10 and it didn't matter at all unless you cared about modern gaming.

        Anonymous

I see pretty useless upgrade. I don't know why MS forced the whole security hardware thing that made 90+% of computers useless if they wanted to get the latest Windows, I get it is easily bypassed but to the vast majority of people they aren't gonna look for a work around.
        >a centered start bar
Oh, wow I didn't even noticed that. Looks similar to Mac OS with its docking thing, its funny when I had a macbook for a little bit I wanted feature from win 7/10 that Mac OS didn't have.
        >69,000 new bugs you're acting as unofficial, unpaid field QA for
        Ah, the usual.

          Anonymous

          >forced the whole security hardware thing
because hardware TPMs allow them to establish a highly desirable (for them) cellphone-style "locked from user meddling from boot to app" environment where it is feasible to have unbreakable, tamper-evident DRM and licensing.
they are hoping to get everyone into W11 with the TPM requirements in-place so that they can start treating computers like cellphones, where there is a verifiable layer of execution outside the owner's control.
the next version of office and adobe products and big-name games and such will require W11 with a TPM for core functions for "security" reasons, and the security will be for them, security from piracy and illegal modification. then they can start charging out the ass for everything even more than they currently do once they know they have technically eliminated all possibility of bypassing it. multiplayer games will require it to "secure" the anti-cheat engines.
