Would you rather be a successful author now or a respected writer after you die?

I realized the answer to that question is the starting point for anyone who wants to write books.

I don't really care either way. I'd be thankful to taste the sweet release of death.

Does that fricking matter? I don't give a shit, I'm not writing because I want fame or anything. Nor I am some "le disturbed soul" crying for help.

Oh it does, I don't want people bothering me, so definitely after I die.

      > I could make shitloads of money
Fricking KEK, you won't make money writing. You should start a business instead.

After I die because I imagine true happiness comes from taking satisfaction in one's work. I can deal with the hunger and the cold and even the lack of b***hes on my dick, I just want to die with a soft smile on my countenance, knowing I did my best.

I don't care if my works go down without acknowledgement to me. I just want to put my ideas onto paper and do them justice. Even if nobody likes any of my works, as long as I am satisfied, I will be happy.

Now. Success now has tangible benefits that will benefit my family. You could argue the latter also meets that goal, but it seems more like a matter of ego. I don’t care what strangers think of me now, so why would I care when I am dead. Give the goods now and I can have good times with loved ones.

I would rather wear a leather sex suit made out of Nick Land.

If a genie appeared to me and offered to guarantee either that I’d be well respected in my lifetime or after my death, I would choose after death, and would release one giant book of the most moronic shit possible, so that future young writers have to sort through the shittiest book of all time forcing themselves to think “How did he do it—this is a masterpiece!”

I think after I die, I hold some pretty controversial opinions that would absolutely hurt people I love/respect, but still, they are my opinions. So considering that I'm dead, they would be dead too, no suffering for them because of my shit.

I think the latter is more or less an impossibility now so I would say the former for that reason alone.

Can someone explain to me why anyone would choose "a respected writer after I die"? It makes no sense to me. It's like the religious notion that there is another life after this one where there is justice, and you will pass into history canonized as a saint of literature. You won't experience it. You can't be assured it will even happen despite your best efforts.

I can understand choosing not to pursue commercial success, or choosing a specific path as a writer (be it moral, intellectual, spiritual, personal...) rather than a path of short term rewards and whorishness for the sake of finances or fashions. I appreciate that literary goals are many, patrons are many. But I don't get this "ahhh, I'll be such a writer after I'm dead" notion. It seems to me the whole point is to reach readers while you are alive, and any pursuits or patrons you serve as a living writer might outlast you if you or your writing have qualities that help it survive. The point is that it -continues- to matter after you die. But it should matter and influence the world before that as well.

Successful author. I want to become a billionaire like J K Rowling, even if that means that the majority of my readers will be kids.
