Writers from small countries with little international influence will never receive widespread recognition, regardless of their merits.

Writers from small countries with little international influence will never receive widespread recognition, regardless of their merits. For example, Ali-Shir Nava'i, the greatest writer in Chagatai Turkic, is practically unknown in most of the world, despite his popularity in the Turkic countries, because Turkic countries have little international influence. Meanwhile, to achieve international renown, one need not even be the greatest writer in one's language, so long as one's country is powerful and influential. Thus, we see that writers like Charles Dickens, Alexandre Dumas, and Anton Chekhov, all of whom are considered to be good but not the best in their home countries, are widely known around the world. For this reason, I find it difficult to take most critics' "best writers" lists seriously; such lists almost always overlook meritorious writers from internationally marginal countries in favor of less deserving writers from more powerful countries.

there's no actual merits. there's just cultural and military strength and imperialism. the merits are post-hoc rationalizations for the pomp of the empire. it all translates to the following statement: we are better than you.

I agree, people are too used in their own circles and are sometimes too dumb to learn about the world about them. It's not easy, but they don't try. Latin America barely get's noticed, and for all intents and purposes it's a very western region.
It's the book version of that copypasta making fun of the idea of the Beatles being the greatest rock band.
I don't trust any history nerd who only knows about Romans or WWII and shit like that, they think they can open their mouth about every other subject.

      And partly this.

Disagree. I RESPECT guys who learn everything there is to know about one topic. Most “history nerds” just read a bunch of random Wiki articles and give one sentence replies to questions (see: IQfy).

Nothing wrong with that but if all you know is about how 12th century Germans tied their hair, don't feel that gives you the confidence to talk about Mesoamerican Mayan suspension bridges or how they were all spearchuckers. IQfy is filled with types like that
There's a lot of people who are geniuses in one field and use it to talk about fields they have no knowledge in

you can learn about these topics by simply googling the question in a crafty manner and reading the sources (which will most likely be articles and such if they're academic)

Chekhov is among the best in Russia, though.
I do agree with the general point, though, of course. Such lists should always be "best writers in my opinion, of the ones I've read".
On the other hand, such a situation makes learning smaller foreign languages worth it. I frequently see people on here asking if French or Russian is a better choice, even though you won't read all the great stuff in either language in your lifetime. Even Polish or Danish would probably provide you with a few decades of good books.
Also, not to mention the general obliviousness to non-western literature. Even "postcolonial" academic homosexuals only really push non-western writers who are from the 20th or 21st century, writing memoirs for westerners to read about their exotic miserable life in a colonial country.

God I hate these paternalistic lefties.

Yeah, people are unfamiliar with stuff that is difficult to access. Why don't these Turks translate some of these works? Oh wait they're too busy shitting up their own countries lmao

He shilled his native Turkic over Persian as a literary language. It's just funny since his name is all persian words

His language, Chagatai, is dead too.

Be careful with Chekhov, you racist!
Russian people made it so that writers from small nations became widely known. Do you, for example, know Sadriddin Aini?

Are you Turkic? Have you considered this writer means nothing to non-Turkic people regardless and that’s why they’re not popular?

You are right that's why more people should read Scaruffi, his cannon contains books outside of meme western countries. For example I remember he had Witkacy in top 10
