It was back then too. Japan successfully industrialised in the late 1800s and was a major military power by the early 1900s and the first non-European country to beat a European country in a war in the modern era. They where not a bunch of backwards ricefarmers living in strawhuts at any point during Mishima's life.

That's like the basic template thinking for every neo conservative. Everything modern sucks and we should go back to a golden era where everything was better. Right wing governments love this rhetoric because it's easier to manipulate the general population with - so I guess he "had to" appease, or maybe the dude just liked the aesthetics

If you think wanting to preserve traditional culture amounts to doing everything the way things were done hundreds of years ago then you're just not very bright. It's like thinking tea and Shakespeare are equally important aspects of English culture. Mishima didn't think there was any major contradiction between appreciating Western innovation and remaining Traditional.

You're on a weeaboo anime website full of people who want to return the Western hemisphere to a more traditional culture.
When /x/ finally figure out how to connect their ouija boards to the internet this entire board will be Mishima and Lovecraft trying to bring back the good old days.

Just read Confessions of a Mask or an autobiography if you want a detailed account of the origin of his psychological condition, but just to summarize he had a distant and militaristic father who forcibly tried to instil a martial/samurai ethos within his son through harsh disciplinary action. Likely exacerbated by an absent mother, generally, but also to act as a restraint to the father. For the first part of his life Mishima was raised by his grandmother extremely austerely, and everything from his diet to interactions with boys his age was limited, I dont think its implicit, but I certainly think Mishima hints at the genetic source of his Sadomasochism through his characterisation of his familial figures during youth. More broadly he had a very sickly constitution so he felt a lingering sense of physical inferiority, wish contributed to his fixation on vitality and adoration of male physicality which transcended mere predilection. Japanese authors seem to be neurotic as a general rule though. Mishima was a chronic exabitionist and I think he derived a kind of sick joy from embracing grotesque themes and images within his work, you can see the darksome way he envisioned himself through the photography shoots in ordeal by roses, but it's important to note that Confessions begins with a fictitious memory, i'm not totally convinced he was as disturbed as he let on though, I think he was attracted partly to the aesthetics of it. People who are perturbed by a continual feeling of inferiority are like this though, it's not Mishima particularly, this is why cutters post online, and are exabitionist in the same way (and are usually feminine if not homosexual).

I look at Truman Capote's supposed quote from Mishima in the OP image with considerable skepticism. Capote was "a charming liar," per George Plimpton, who didn't have any particular axe to grind with TC. The credibility valence would also be considerably higher if someone like, say, a Donald Richie -- a modest, reliable journalist -- had told the story. Too, the rather vulgar, street hustler note struck by the alleged remark doesn't really jibe with other Mishima anecdotes, including ones on this thread like this:
