I am not a very fun guy to be around most of the time. Then some of the time I am, which makes people like me, and then they either realize that I'm not most of the time, or they just figure I'm brooding or something when I'm not fun to be around. The truth is I got nothing in my head. I'm not very fun to be around. I think I've met a genius recently. He seems to have taken it upon himself to lift me out of my obscurity. He wants to hang with me a lot. I think he will tire of me soon. He probably thinks I have thoughts. Either that or he's a saint and is really just trying to help.

I was always a very boring fellow to be around, it's the same feeling I had when I was a kid. I always sucked to be around. I feel like I could just try to spread my wings and do shit but it will just seem forced (it will be forced) and then it gets worse. I spent time with family today though and it was almost like I could feel my heart growing. I imagine this is how humanity has survived, because being around family is so good for you. Charges you somehow. Good family anyway.

Fitting OP. I feel completely useless for spending so much time playing Katamari and I'm not even good enough to not get dissed by the king or fans. I've spent how many thousands of my life playing video games with nothing to show for it, I wonder. Cellini was 30 by the time he did amazing things. I'm approaching 30 and I have nothing to my honor or credit. So what if I have a house or wife. I brag about those things like an urban youth would his sneakers. I am terrible in all things. If I were a character in a story, the critics would call it heavy-handed. I walk train tracks when I can because I miss the road. When I hear a fricking whistle I forget what I'm doing, and just think about how I want to be hopping freight. It lasts for 5 minutes or so. There's a girl I like. I broke up with my girlfriend today because I felt guilty about wanting to frick this other girl too much. I hope I never frick her. It gives me the drive to write, exercise, study anything and everything, etc. People like me a lot, now. I can strike up a conversation very easily with most strangers. I miss being depressed, though. I miss being at the bottom of the barrel, fighting my way up. I miss drug addiction, I miss being fat, I miss being a self-pitying moron. I really just miss having nothing to lose.

I'm up on my luck for the moment. I'm about to finish a masters (never do know where the apostraphe goes), I can frick some beautiful women, and I get to work on myself every day. I still can't do a pull up, but I've made major progress. I can feel it coming, too. Should be able to do one by the end of the summer if I keep working at it. I couldn't do a push up a year and a half ago. 3 years ago I weighed 250 pounds (down to 170 now by just not gorging myself).

I'd really give anything to frick that girl at the moment. It would last about 3 weeks. I'm not a good longterm relationship prospect for any woman; I'm too capricious and unstable. The only ones I actually dig will absolutely ruin my life. This girl seems to be on my level. Writing this here because I haven't written much lately and just needed to get SOMETHING down to start writing about shit I actually care about. Thanks for the thread fellas.

When you're running away from yourself for half your life, should you be surprised when you finally lose yourself in the mental dust that you have kicked up? I fear living, in its purest form, is what I truly fret. I have been self-medicated for half my life, the other half is burned up into fragments of a dreamlike vision. A vision I can't even grasp anymore. A waking dream, quickly transitioning into a living nightmare. My comedown is just facing my reality, and my reality feels like an endless withdrawal.
Did I medicate because I enjoyed the high? Or, was it a way of keeping myself distant from a deeper, and evermore seeding, fear. The fear that I find no enjoyment anymore in anything. In complete desolation, I guess there is solace to be found in disassociation.

Martial. Learning that a book, or even a verse or paragraph could radically shift in theme and 'emotion' was quite valuable. I realized that many readers seem to come with the notion that a book must either be sad or happy or one thing only, and that the error caused a misreading of the entire content. Understanding also the flexibility of mind required even to 'fully read' was incredibly valuable.

Nier:Automata. That game made me realize the intrinsic story-telling advantages that are unique to video games and it also made me consider what something like that might be for a book. I never considered the possibilities unique to a medium before that.

I’m not sure about that, but I have considered how a book is an inherently tactile experience. I recall DFW describing in an interview that in the future he wanted to pay more attention to how words are structured on a page, literally how a page looked. I think actually there are examples that come to mind. Blood Meridian is a hook that’s been talked to death, I know. But if I can say one more thing about it, I would say that one of the major draws of that book is precisely the biblical tone. That’s something that obviously can only captured with a book.

That’s what I’m looking at actually. There’s a decent 1 bedroom in the nicer part of that city for that price. I have about $40k put aside which I could use for a down payment. But at the same time, I’m so sick of my job, my career track, and frankly my life. I want to use those savings to quit my job, move cities, and gamble on myself for a while. I want to fix my health and fitness, spend some serious time writing, and get a job I can feel good about. It’s also hard because my current job is very comfortable 99% of the time. I work remotely and they don’t ask for much time. Honestly, I only have work to do for maybe 16-24 hours per week. The rest is free time. But those 16 hours make me want to shoot myself.

lmao i'm living the same life. i have to go in to the office to work but my commute is like a 10 minute walk. then i sit at a desk and read or browse the web all day unless somebody requests some data in which case i pull it out of the database and email it to them. it doesn't pay much though, but it's just so easy. the thought of having to commute for an hour and actually do stuff for eight hours in a row sucks even if it paid twice as much. i also want to quit and live off dividends, so i think buying a condo with property taxes and a hoa etc. would make that harder than just renting a room in some shitty state like wv and doing whatever, idk. owning property is good, but it's not like suddenly your housing is free, owning a house/condo still costs money.

            Anonymous

So what do you actually want to do? I mean, my aspiration is mainly to just live off savings for a year or more and spend that time writing or working out. Ideally, I’d be able to make a living from writing, but if not, I’d hope to have some better idea what I should do. I assume you have no wife and kids? I don’t. I do want them, but it seems a waste to not take risks while I have this freedom. How do you feel about it?

i work on my own programming and digital art projects when i'm not at work. it's kind of nice cuz i can get in my reading at work, and then when i get home work on my own stuff. i just want to retire on passive income. you know, the whole "fire" thing. i'm debating if buying property will make retiring happen sooner or later. nice to own a house, but if it wipes out a big chunk of income producing investments, do you come out ahead or behind when the subtract the saved rent from property taxes, home owners fees, and amortized maintenance costs. idk.

            Anonymous

Why does that appeal to you so much? I am part of a pension scheme and will probably be able to retire between 50 and 60 if I want, but that’s not all that attractive to me. I feel like I’ll have basically lived my life by that point, so to suffer through a job I never wanted just for that seems silly. I know the smart thing to do would be practical and keep my job, while I build what I want on the side, so I could reap benefits of both. But I just find that intolerable for some reason. Do you not feel similarly working for FIRE?

Yesterday I had a revelation. It never occurred to me that people actually like life. As in, there's no purpose or whatever, but you live life for the sake of enjoying it. Life revolves around living a good life. I always thought life was a curse, life was suffering, life was an obligation we were forced upon without agreements, life was horror. But it looks like people generally just like being alive. Doesn't matter what they do, experience, or think, they just like being alive, so they keep going, and maybe they try to live a good life. I mean, childhood was good, being in school was okay, being a student was shit, but now things start to get in the right direction, however I don't see much sense in being alive after 30, like all this struggle seems pointless, however looks like that doesn't really matter, you just are here because actually life is a good thing, I was never aware of that. Nobody ever said to me that life is something good. This is confusing as hell. This changes everything.

The salad bar is truly the peak of humanity's technological advancement and efficiency. The salad bar takes fresh ingredients from all across the planet and centralizes them in your local super market or cafeteria for easy consumption. A plethora of dishes that individually would take hours to prepare are available at your whim and desire in within the confines of a couple of square meters at low prices. The tragedy of the salad bar is it's disuse, despite the fact that it's a marvel of convenience people have not learnt to appreciate it, the salad bar consistently operates at a loss, and a large portion of it's delicious contents go to waste. Perhaps in the future more people will learn to love this wonder of modernity.

it's obvious that the lack of feta cheese and black olives in said salad bar are the primary reason for its marginalization.

They offer bad salad then declare mankind to be disinterested in all salad.

I have writer's block. I want to write, but in my head I keep thinking of new things to add or change to what I want to write. Then I never end up writing it down. I end up drinking instead, get a headache, or go outside. I can't get it down on paper.

I'm afraid to come out of my room because I was accosted by my mom yesterday and I don't want to deal with her.
    I'm 26, by the way (:

I came downstairs to put my plate away and my mom had food on her plate, so she asked me if I wanted any, and I mulled the answer over for a few seconds before saying "sure," but she gets pissy at me because of it. I feel like she wants to have a conflict with me when I just want to avoid one.
