For the last 20+ years I have never owned any mouse with a mechanical rotary encoder.
Optical scrolls are indestructible.
I believe in nothing now, but will look into this.
Optical rotary sensors in mice are actually older than optical mice.

There are actually two 1-bit detectors so it can distinguish four positions of the wheel.
One direction is 00-01-11-10 loop another is 00-10-11-01 loop.
Mechanical encoders work the same.
Most modern encoders use graycode.
Yes and my example was 2-bit graycode, because mouse scrolls don't use more than 2 bits.
His scroll wheel obviously isn’t gray coded though.

Logitech has some electromagnetic scroll wheels, but dunno how they hold up in time.
Those are mostly for their automatic detent system, which is part of the MX series and probably the MS Precision Surface mouse that they probably OEMed. Depending on how fast the mouse wheel is going, the detents would disengage allowing you to just send it. This system was terribly fragile for a long time and was supposedly fixed with that electromagnetic system. There's a seperate PCB on the left side of the wheel, which probably is for tracking how far the wheel has moved and how fast via hall effect sensors.
Even the cheapest mice like the b100 use optical sensors like
for detecting how far the mouse has moved, which is also probably bulletproof. The electromagnetic system is cool and all, but I don't see them bringing it down to their lower SKUs due to the flying ribbon cable.
