I heard in China bureaucracy positions were extremely competitive this year, so they intentionally made the Gaokao exams extremely difficult in rural areas, almost impossibly difficult, while urban areas had normal difficulty.

They don't need to make rural area more difficult. Those areas get poor students in poor school to begin with.

Geniuses don't just "pop up" out of no where. They're embedded in a society that appreciates and cultivates intellectual pursuits. There's a reason Gauss didn't "pop up" in Africa for example.

Yeah I wonder what that reason was.

Even if the majority are low IQ, surely there's the potential that a non-zero number have (or would have had) genuis level IQ if they didn't grow up malnourished or fail for environmental reasons?

            Anonymous

The most probable geniuses are related to diplomats or high castes like ramanujan. There are plenty of african diplomat familes outside of africa that have achieved nothing academically remarkable even with all the environmental advantages.

Oysters and cats are not humans, though. And as far as I know IQ is mostly genetic (I can provide sources if you want. Obviously Ramanujan is the most popular example. Mutations do happen, so afaik at least in theory it should be possible for a child with genius IQ to be born even in areas we would not expect to find them.

Ramanujan is a relative nobody in the world of math. Mathematicians like to claim he was a "genius" when he doesnt even have any major proofs to his name. Everything he did had to be written down and proved by other people or proven years later.

            Anonymous

Tbf, the interesting thing about Ramanujan is that all his books were full of true results yet he had no idea how he reached it. It is, for me, the most valid explanation of a real genius: doing something right yet you have no idea how since you never studied it.You just did it.

            Anonymous

He knew how he reached his results. He worked on a slate because he couldn't afford paper, so after he filled up the board he'd have to erase his previous work to continue. When he reached an interesting result, he'd write it down without the derivation.

When he started doing math, he'd never seen proofs before so he thought the formulas were the only part that was important. He was still undeniably a genius.

            >Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (/ˌlɒməˈnɒsɒf/;[1] Russian: Mихaил (Mихaйлo) Bacильeвич Лoмoнocoв; 19 November [O.S. 8 November] 1711 – 15 April [O.S. 4 April] 1765) was a Russian polymath, scientist and writer, who made important contributions to literature, education, and science. Among his discoveries were the atmosphere of Venus and the law of conservation of mass in chemical reactions. His spheres of science were natural science, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, history, art, philology, optical devices and others. Founder of modern geology,[2][3] Lomonosov was also a poet and influenced the formation of the modern Russian literary language.
            >Lomonosov was born in the village of Mishaninskaya (later renamed Lomonosovo in his honor) in Archangelgorod Governorate, on an island not far from Kholmogory, in the far north of Russia.[4] His father, Vasily Dorofeyevich Lomonosov, was a prosperous peasant fisherman

They would. The cost of missing some genius is much higher than the benefit of keeping your urban pops happy with competitive advantages. One person won't matter in the grand scheme of things and Gauss wouldn't go for a bureaucrat job anyway, he'd frick off to some top university to do research.

China has a pretty aggressive affirmative action policy where they literally add points on the Gaokao if you identify/register as a minority. Notice I say register because there are quite a bit of Hans who register their children as minorities for these benefits (the minorities within continental China don't look very different from Hans)

That's the thing you're missing. They're not high IQ geniuses. They're the average highschooler studying for exams. That implies they're precisely at the level they should be as opposed to being further like real geniuses who would have passed exams, graduated and gone to study at universities before the age of 16. Chinese or not, humans are humans. That's what this really shows. Talent? Hard work? None of it matters, as you'll always be behind someone else. Especially in a field of study like mathematics, you're always behind. You can't possibly know all the current research in each branch of mathematics which is where PhD level people are at.

Might as well ask here: why did the Native Americans in North America ever make a vast civilization like what Europe/Middle East/Far East saw? All of these groups contributed to art/culture/mathematics/literature/philosophy/technology in some way shape or form, and Mezo-Natives like the Incans, Mayans, and Aztecs at least tried to build a proto Egypt-like empire (albeit it thousands of years later). What the hell were North American natives doing?

tens of thousand of years of continuous intertribal warfare. every single successful 1600s north american settlement succeeded on the grounds of coastal indians negotiating a "you use your guns on our enemies, we give u free land" deal with the settlers. there were a few moments during the millennia of small scale skirmishes when some small beginnings of civilization got a foothold, but they never lasted.
native americans are referred to as "savages" because that is what they are. they are on par with aussie aboriginals in terms of their inherent capabilities.
