Books on the hippy movement

Do any anons know any good books about the hippy movement, sexual liberation and the New Left in general? (Preferably not schizo, conspiracy stuff.)
I've been reading Elementary Particles and now I want a deeper dive into this topic.

People who pin the decline of the West on the 1960s counterculture miss the point. Much of it was a reaction against materialism which is at least as bad if not worse.

Nice historical revisionism. It was a reaction to the turmoil of the 40s and 50s. Materialism was in 80s and 90s, and was largely a reaction to the repulsive immaterial ideals put force in the 70s.

People say materialism like it'a a bad thing. My brother in christ you are a material being. Get real.

Read a Beat poem or novel sometime. Not for enjoyment but for edification; it's all about opposing the sterility of '50s capitalism and returning to the romantic spirit of Whitman and Ezra Pound.
It doesn't matter anyway. It only happened because the Axis lost.

By the way, your taking 'materialism' in a different sense than I gave it proves nothing but your snark.

My grandma was a hippy, did a lot of drugs and booze. She tried to kill herself but had a schizo moment and became a born again christian. My grandfather, also a hippy, did heroin up till his death.

I couldn’t finish it. I think there was a character named “Stark Naked” that went insane from too much acid. Incredibly idiotic and tragic.

I finished this recently. A bit of a drudge at times but it's good.
Weirdly enough, it actually made me a lot more cynical about the hippie movement. I went into it knowing that there were major problems with the culture, but I was still definitely pro-hippie. I'm a big psychedelics guy and the culture always appealed to me. But after reading this I realized that hippies were probably annoying as frick to be around.

Tom Wolfe's - Pump House Gang and Electric Kool-Aid is a good place to start.
