I use a UPS because sometimes my old stick welder trips the main breaker. We'll be going for a hybrid solar plant next year which will put the entire house under UPS I guess.

Yes it is impressive. There is no need for a home user to run a machine for this long without interruption. I put my NAS to sleep between 2am and 8am every day.

Actually, now I think of it, I have a samsung phone with LineageOS to use around the home that I have intentionally not updated as it has been up for so long. I am impressed with the stability of this random unofficial ROM that I downloaded but now I don't want to turn it off as I'm curious as to how long it will run for.

its main purpose is to provide clean uninterrupted power to your equipment. power surge, brownouts, spikes, low voltage can damage shit. its job is to keep the power 100% so your furry porn doesnt get lost when you get a power surge and your computer gets fried because you had no UPS to filter that shit out and maintain the power.

A UPS does none of the above. It's a glorified mosfet package with a shitty square waveform generator. This is quite the oppose of muh "power surge, brownouts, spikes, low voltage can damage shit" mitigating device. If anything, the switch over will frick with AC devices, not that the shitty waveforms produced by pretty much all inverters will do your devices, ac or switch mode, any favors.

Yes. Essential if you live in an area serviced by overhead power lines and get occasional brownouts when there are heavy storms or when tree branches fall on them.
My favourite was when a possum cooked itself on one of the phases and voltage dropped to under 100V (should be 240V).

Also frick this shit. I'm sure if you polled UPS users their OS choice would have way more Linux users than baseline. Why isn't there a standard protocol?

A thrift-store APC unit will let you do that so long as it has a data port. The cables can be had for ~$10 or less on eBay. All but the very lowest-end ones have them, and most Linux distros have apcupsd in the repos (a free utility that you can use in lieu of APC's rubbish Powerchute software).

Whole house generator gang rise up. I still have my nas and networking gear on an ups to protect the array during the brief moment power is off before the auto transfer switch does its thing. Plus I live in a rural area without sewer/gas/water lines so in the unlikely event I’m without power for over a week or so (the capacity of my tank) it’ll shut down my nas gracefully if everything else fricks up. The nas is supposed to cut off if the tank drops below 40% or runtime goes above 72 hours because at either of those points energy conservation starts to become a priority. Also anyone who has a generac or honeywell generator should use genmon to monitor it, don’t pay for generacs ridiculously overpriced hardware that also requires monthly fees to use.

Also just gotta say this, don't forget to check the batteries every so often. The batteries used in your UPS are likely recycled, so they tend to wear out after a bit (there's a reason you can't get an extended warranty on the things usually) you don't want giant pillows of hate.

Yes. I didn't used to, but due to some flaky power transformer the local power company refuses to fix until it completely blows up... I was forced to get a UPS.

The transformer will often make this loud buzzing noise followed by a loud explosion noise that sounds like a bomb went off and shakes the whole neighborhood followed by a momentary outage before coming back online. I seriously don't know what the frick is going on with that power transformer but it scares me.

Does the transformer do that shit at night? That would be enough for me to pester the company with calls daily if it does.

Some are not (cheap), some are simulated (average), some are real (costly). Providing real sine makes your PC power supply last longer. The better the signal, the less it has to work extra. Anonymous

If your PC draws 1000W and your PSU is rated for 1000W it means the PSU will keep your PC running for three minutes while the PC can shut down safely. Get passive pfc + pure sine. Active pfc is only necessary beyond 1000W. Pure sine is not necessary but very good for PC components.

How do brownouts damage your computer exactly? Is it too late for me?

      Only your PSU might suffer.

I have a small UPS for my rack, which has the router, switch, and home server. CCTV cameras use PoE so they are also covered with the UPS.
But I don't have one for my computer. I had planned to install one, but got stuck on the planning phase, and didn't get to do it yet.
But now I decided not to do it. It's not worth it. Instead, I'm installing a battery for the whole house. It's much cheaper than installing multiple UPS in the long run, and will keep the lights on for much longer than any UPS. I plan to install one that should last ~8h with my usage.
What do you guys think of it?

    >You have a UPS for your pc, right anon?
No. I live in Louisiana. On the rare occasion the power goes out, it stays out for a week or three because a hurricane blew through.

I don't, because I live in a civilised country, but if someone was offering me a UPS, I'd plug it in, why not.

It's stupid to buy a UPS in the Third World, because the models here are utter trash.

Yes I have a UPS, because when someone starts the dryer to be more than 40 degrees celsius or spin at more than 1200 RPM then the power goes out.
