Why are woman so stupid? Everyone should have a UPS. You have a UPS for your pc, right anon?

Why are woman so stupid? Everyone should have a UPS. You have a UPS for your pc, right anon?
I do actually. End of thread.
Same and it has saved my ass countless times.
I don't. But I have a whole-house generator/power conditioner.
No. Because I don't live in South Africa
This. 130 days of uptime on my mini pc home server plugged straight into the outlet. I even live in a shithole apartment.
is 130 days supposed to be impressive? cuz it isnt
Woke on your reading comprehension dipshit
>Woke

Rekt my entire smartass reply 🙁
I use a UPS because sometimes my old stick welder trips the main breaker. We'll be going for a hybrid solar plant next year which will put the entire house under UPS I guess.
Yes it is impressive. There is no need for a home user to run a machine for this long without interruption. I put my NAS to sleep between 2am and 8am every day.
He turns off his computer each day
Lol
Lamao
How gay.
my computer doesnt work on the shabbat because it was made intel aviv
My grandpa has got more uptime on his $300 Pentium laptop from 2012 running LTSC 2016 lel
>laptop
Doesn't count
to be fair laptop battery did not work in that machine as it was plugged in 24/7 (in pic you can see battery is dead)
the highest I have had the opportunity to take a screenshot of myself other than that is a server i have that got decommisioned recently but got 590 days w/ UPS of course.
There's just something about seeing that uptime number going up that rustles my jimmies just right
It is satisfying indeed, I used to intentionally run things as long as I could.
unfortunately I am a responsible adult nowadays so I update my servers regularly and don't see such uptimes 🙁
Actually, now I think of it, I have a samsung phone with LineageOS to use around the home that I have intentionally not updated as it has been up for so long. I am impressed with the stability of this random unofficial ROM that I downloaded but now I don't want to turn it off as I'm curious as to how long it will run for.
>Windows 7 classic theme

What kind of fricked up electric installation do you have there?
Thought about buying one, but they are so bulky and I don't really have a need for one. I operate on a laptop and that basically has a upc built in, if you leave it plugged in.
Why would I? Just get a decent PSU and live in the first world where you have a main breaker and one for each room. When the power goes out for one hour every 2 years I can still consoom on my 3ds or just walk my dog.
One for the PC, one for the server, and one for the networking equipment

Sure blackouts are uncommon but these things are incredible for those frequent summer brownouts
>frequent summer brownouts
Have you tried not living in a third world country, anon?
You'd have this issue too if you people actually adopted air conditioning, you luddite.
>air conditioning is so superior we get brownouts
You might as well advocate for shitting your pants.
>brownouts a few times a week that don't even phase you because you have UPSs
>worse than sitting in ball stew 24/7
Sounds like sour grapes. Don't worry though, anon. Someday your country will make that giant leap into the 20th century.
Are you actually moronic?
Brownouts aren't a sign of living in a first world country. Get it into your skull, the US isn't #1.
I never said that you goddamned moron
>brownouts a few times a week
literally where?
>those frequent summer brownouts
wtf, do you live in brazil or something?
>implying every household adding an additional 1-3kW of load wouldn't cause issues for any grid
Not in a developed nation it doesn't.
bullshit
Not even brownouts, but just those quick voltage transients when all the lights dim, and your microwave resets itself.
that happens maybe once every couple months, the only thing of mine sensitive to them is my printer, it always resets with small brownouts
I thought that was a brownout
nevermind
isn't that what a brownout is?
for my servers yes, but why would i use one for your PC? does your country not have a stable power grid?
Imagine living in a place where you need a UPS to keep the power going.
>Imagine living in a place where you need a UPS to keep the power going.
its main purpose is to provide clean uninterrupted power to your equipment. power surge, brownouts, spikes, low voltage can damage shit. its job is to keep the power 100% so your furry porn doesnt get lost when you get a power surge and your computer gets fried because you had no UPS to filter that shit out and maintain the power.
Anon, you're replying to one of those "chirp" people.
Isn't a surge protector good enough though?
A UPS does none of the above. It's a glorified mosfet package with a shitty square waveform generator. This is quite the oppose of muh "power surge, brownouts, spikes, low voltage can damage shit" mitigating device. If anything, the switch over will frick with AC devices, not that the shitty waveforms produced by pretty much all inverters will do your devices, ac or switch mode, any favors.
these are piles of shit with a loud fan that keeps buzzing and beeping when the trash battery dies in a year
get a proper psu homosexual
>You have a UPS for your pc, right anon?
I could if I would, but shan't.
No, because I can't find a cheap one that will tell my Linux server to gracefully power down when the power goes out.
Yes. Essential if you live in an area serviced by overhead power lines and get occasional brownouts when there are heavy storms or when tree branches fall on them.
My favourite was when a possum cooked itself on one of the phases and voltage dropped to under 100V (should be 240V).
Also frick this shit. I'm sure if you polled UPS users their OS choice would have way more Linux users than baseline. Why isn't there a standard protocol?
>imagine being filtered by NUT
Post your nut-cgi
A thrift-store APC unit will let you do that so long as it has a data port. The cables can be had for ~$10 or less on eBay. All but the very lowest-end ones have them, and most Linux distros have apcupsd in the repos (a free utility that you can use in lieu of APC's rubbish Powerchute software).
Those things catch fire and add complexity. Smart woman.
no, i don't need one as i live in a real country
i haven't ever seen the electric flicker in the 7 years i've lived in this house
she should use a lappy top then
My pc pulls upwards of 1300w and a ups for that would be expensive since I'm not using anything less than a double conversion unit if I'm going to bother with it
Since you don't sound like a poorgay, this thread isn't for you
>picrel
that a propane generate?
Whole house generator gang rise up. I still have my nas and networking gear on an ups to protect the array during the brief moment power is off before the auto transfer switch does its thing. Plus I live in a rural area without sewer/gas/water lines so in the unlikely event I’m without power for over a week or so (the capacity of my tank) it’ll shut down my nas gracefully if everything else fricks up. The nas is supposed to cut off if the tank drops below 40% or runtime goes above 72 hours because at either of those points energy conservation starts to become a priority. Also anyone who has a generac or honeywell generator should use genmon to monitor it, don’t pay for generacs ridiculously overpriced hardware that also requires monthly fees to use.
I have the digital readout version of that very one Anon
highly based, I even got the LIFEPO version of the batteries for it. Lead-acid batteries are shit tbh
I'll take it send it to me
If she uses a lappy, absolutely no point in ups.
Also just gotta say this, don't forget to check the batteries every so often. The batteries used in your UPS are likely recycled, so they tend to wear out after a bit (there's a reason you can't get an extended warranty on the things usually) you don't want giant pillows of hate.
But you should check all your batteries every so often, you are checking your batteries, right anon?

>none. sudden power off does no harm. just save your work once a while
ok. go ahead. Flash your bios and unplug while the flash is running.
>has backup bios you can boot in
Nothing personel, kid.
Bios has one backup anyway. If flash bios goes shit, it loads the previous. There is no use case for UPS.
>There is no use case for being able to save your work prior to your computer dying
You people are legitimately stupid.
a UPS won't stop solidworks from crashing
and I have a goldfish.
speak of the devil
it really did crash a couple minutes after i posted that
as it is i have to save after every little thing i do
I stated previously save your work once a while. Idk why zoomers are tech illiterate but i know one who did not save his work before closing laptop lid and putting it into backpack
Nobody saves their work, that's a conversation unrelated. If you are given an extra 5 minutes to save your work and gracefully shut down this is better than your computer randomly dying in the middle of whatever it is you are doing. I can't fricking believe there is someone contrarian towards a backup battery.
Maybe you should learn ctrl+s shortcut. UPS is a massive ICK. Technically you are stating that you are not man enough to build a society with proper electrical network
>B-but that's o-out of m-my c-capabilities
Yes thats why it's so ICKY. In her eyes you are loser. And the UPS box is the statue of your loserdom.

No, they're not necessary in most use cases.
no, because I'm not concerned about data loss from power outages
I do have a series mode surge protector though cause my area gets tons of brownouts and my house has ancient wiring

Any recommendations for a PC UPS?
I have a CP 1500 PFC LCD.
Yes. I didn't used to, but due to some flaky power transformer the local power company refuses to fix until it completely blows up... I was forced to get a UPS.
The transformer will often make this loud buzzing noise followed by a loud explosion noise that sounds like a bomb went off and shakes the whole neighborhood followed by a momentary outage before coming back online. I seriously don't know what the frick is going on with that power transformer but it scares me.
Does the transformer do that shit at night? That would be enough for me to pester the company with calls daily if it does.

What the frick are you talking about anon
The battery charge that the UPS has isn't worth it for your ESL brain.
Why are (YOU) so stupid that you want to start a lithium housefire?
I think that most of UPS batteries are GEL.
No but i wanna get one for my terrarium in case power outage in winter so my snake doesn't get cold and fricking die
pic related, my snake
cute snek
Thank you i love her 🙂
cute snake anon 🙂
idk I get power outages like once a year so
the trick is to not be born in a 3rd world country like the USA
eh, solidworks crashes 1000x more often than the power goes out, so what's the point, i lose more work just because it's an unstable piece of shit than i ever would with outages
oh, as for the concern regarding corrupted files, i have all my documents syncthing'd to multiple machines, including a VPS (encrypted), a couple of them are also regularly snapshotted, so even if the file(s) i'm working on become corrupted on the machine i'm using, it won't lose anything, not that they have become corrupted anyway, but you can never be too careful
i actually did have a ups once before, but the ups died in such a way as to turn on and off, which killed one of my hdd's, so i'm a bit put off ups's truth be told
The average person doesn’t need a usps because the average person only uses mobile devices
No. My internet goes out when the power goes out any way so what's the point? I have to wait for the internet to come back regardless.
UPS's are mainly just about saving your work and shutting down safely, not continuing to work while the power is out
>work
Oh okay, I don't need it then.
yea, if you don't create anything then it doesn't matter
>implying the average job creates anything of value
Sure thing Jacob, Wendys Chef
well i never said everyone needs a ups
... you can attach a UPS to routers, moron
depending on the connection and outage type, you could lose internet access even if you have whole-house power backup
that happened to me a short while ago, there was a massive storm that took out power in large regions, i hooked my generator up to the house so i could keep my fridges/freezers going along with a bunch of other things, but the internet was out anyway, even with all my equipment powered. i'm a pirate though so i just watched shows i'd downloaded
>that happened to me a short while ago, there was a massive storm that took out power in large regions
of course, but then, you are moronic for living in places where such events happen.
also, you could get a 4G modem/router and I guess some antennas would still work
>of course, but then, you are moronic for living in places where such events happen.
sure, i'll just move somewhere without weather
this was something like a once-in-20-years event, most power outages i see only last a couple minutes, and those only happen once or twice a year
and yes, i have my router set up so i can use a phone hotspot for internet access if the need arises, but because of the severity of that event, mobile internet was pretty swamped
and where the frick do you live with perfect weather?
Most of the time this happens to me too. But one time I had a power outage but the Internet was still up. That's when my UPS came in handy.
Why do you care what she wants, SIMP?
>asking womemes what they want
>Why are woman
Needful
I bought one in 2021 after having 4 power cuts in a week and ever since then the power has been completely stable and the UPS hasn't gotten any use outside of me unplugging it once a month to make sure it still works properly
>unplugging
DO NOT DO THIS. USE THE BUILT-IN TEST FUNCTION.
These things aren't designed to be used without ground. Realistically you'll be fine 99% of the time, but better safe than sorry when you're dealing with an expensive brick that is electrically connected to more expensive bricks.
What, you're still using a desktop?
>power outage just twice in 23 years I've been living in this place
im ok
no i live in a country with a first world power grid, nationwide average outage is 23 minutes yearly counting maintenance
never had a random outage
no, i have solar and batteries. I power my pc from the 12v bank directly with a picopsu, no need for dirty ac near my pc
a ups is just insurance
your power grid might be excellent and never get a black out or brown out, but if it happens even once and you lose data or your stuff bricks, you're gonna wish you bought a ups
I have had my current PC for 10 years and I've never had a problem
Whenever there is a power outage my computer just turns on and I can turn it back on again
Yes i found one in the trash turns out it just needed a new battery, now it's safe garding my battle station
no but I have one for my router and a combo gasoline and propane generator just in case
i might consider buying one when they are widely available with lifepo4 batteries. it's not really necessary in developed countries with a solid electric grid infrastructure (ie. not the US).
the grid doesnt matter if the shithole building you call a house has shitty wiring
source: me, american
Got one
It *LOWERED* the uptime, since it needs battery replacement or something after few years.
I dont have a UPS because i dont live in 3rd world country
no i have a backup generator for the house
I have one for my NAS just so it can shut itself down and prevent data loss.
During a power cut internet will be down as well so apart from gaming there isn't too much I can do on my PC.
UPS don't last long enough for me
my PC is too powerful;
also my homelab is hosted on a laptop so it don't really need a ups
How much wattage does it draw? More than 2000?
I don't get it. Why would I need one? Is it to protect my gear? Why wouldn't a half-decent surge protector work? Hell, I've used cheap power strips most of my life and it's never been a problem. Is it to consoom media when I lose power once or twice per year? I just light a candle and read, who cares? Got servers? So you can't live without some service for a few hours, or days? Who gives a frick about uptime at home?
I just don't get it. Please, anon, enlighten me. What am I not considering here?
>Why would I need a device which provides extra power in the case of a power outage
The world may never know.
Can you folks really not live without your computers for a few hours? Seriously? It's not even like these things can provide power for days. Take the opportunity of a power-outage to do something else.
>backup battery
>few hours
That's a generator you illiterate. A backup battery is for saving your computer long enough to gracefully shut down.
OP's girlfriend (and probably most anons on this board) aren't doing shit important enough to warrant a UPS to do that. We're talking about home users here, not enterprise. Enable auto save on documents or just save often you silly billy. Most folks here would probably just be consooming shit when power outages hit. Doesn't matter.
A graceful shutdown prevents your next power on from potentially being a 300 dollar fix. It's that simple. There is literally zero reason to not have a backup battery/surge protector unless you're a contrarian IQfyirgin. Even those morons have them.
Anybody here work with Data Annotation?
I've yet to be hired in a real company but I'm making money with this ($40/hr, work from home whenever you want the hours you want)
It's kind of annoying coming up with example to ask the AI though
Yes, but the battery needs to be replaced and I've been procrastinating.
If you have a UPS & backup power but don't have satellite internet wtf are you doing?
I only have one for my server and network equipment.
Why would I need one?
No really, why? The last time there was any blackout was over a decade ago.
What's a good brand? I don't want to buy some shit off Amazon and have it break immediately or something overpriced.
They all are chinkshit and cause housefire
Utter moron. Battery tech is real and companies of all sizes spend a good chunk of money on UPSes to keep their shitty towers from going down and causing downtime.
Tripplite, APC, Cyberpower are all serviceable. Eaton for something more heavy duty. All have reporting, notifications, and the ability to automate graceful shutdowns.
If you absolutely must not have any downtime you'd be using live migrations and failover redundant servers coupled with regularly scheduled maintenance to replace batteries.
I don't and I actually had a powerout today, wiping out hundreds of tabs and data I had opened in incognito firefox
really made me think I should finally get a UPS
Tab hoarders deserve what is coming. Also, chink comic porn is not 'data'
Pretty sure that's just a meme. No one hoards hundreds of open tabs without bookmarking. I mean IQfy is moronic, but we're not that moronic. It's like using a PC, but installing the OS to your RAM.
>No one hoards hundreds of open tabs without bookmarking.
You say this so confidently, because you can't imagine a world where people are so pants on head moronic as to having hundreds, even thousands, of tabs opened.
You are living in that world. Those people exist, anon.
there are people with hundreds of youtube tabs open right now, some from a few months ago
Is it an expensive PC? If so, tell her if it breaks she can go eat shit, you're not fixing it or buying her another one.
I had UPS once. During two years it caused my computer to turn off multiple times because it suddenly turned off and had to be restarted manually. During that time there were 0 actual power outages at my home. I threw the UPS away.
No, I don't live in a 3rd world shithole where that's necessary.
serious question. what are some ups options that aren't loud and obnoxious and doesn't cost a fortune
APC and Cyberpower (the latter of which may be starting house fires now) have a 150 dollar pure sinewave option that usually goes on sale.
>Cyberpower
>explodes in your path
> (the latter of which may be starting house fires now)
arent all ups sinewave? wtf
Some are not (cheap), some are simulated (average), some are real (costly). Providing real sine makes your PC power supply last longer. The better the signal, the less it has to work extra. A cheap non-sine UPS will kill all your little AC/DC adapters one by one. You know, that shit that powers your Internet modem.
shit, i was about to use an old 24v ups as an inverter while i reform the old house i bought
that crap will probably frick my powertools
that's a meme, i've been using simulated sine wave for 15 years
0 electronic deaths
Cool story bro. My switch's power supply melted a week after I hooked it up to a brand new BU650.
>europe
guess the meme about europe having better electricity than usa was a meme too
sucks to suck
Who the frick have you been talking to? Europe's energy grid sucks. The only places where it's decent is in all those towns that were destroyed by and rebuilt after WW2.
they like to flaunt their 230 volt 3 phase power grid and then it zaps their network switch and blame it on other products running on their same shitty grid
its funny
I'm European and my home is 230 and it doesn't do anything. I still have 3 UPS and, because of the law, all the big appliances need their own circuits yet never fail. I had a blackout once because the power company cut my subscription because I was drawing power for 2 homes. Turns out my neighbor was a thieving b***h and stole my electricity for a month without anyone noticing. The power company did NOTHING to notify me, investigate, press charges, nothing. He can't be evicted because he'd be homeless. This is Europe.
>NOOOOOO YOU CAN'T PUT THE LAUNDROMAT AND YOUR PC ON THE SAME CIRCUIT NOOOOOOOOOOO
Who the frick cares? I have all my delicate electronics on UPS anyway.
Kek there are 7 different circuits in my 30 square meter studio apartment in europe, it's kinda silly
Never had a blackout in 10+ years that was not scheduled downtime for maintenance
>30 square meter studio apartment
Let me guess, you pay 1400€ rent?
About €350, I don't live in muslim infested shithole
Work freelance for foreign company save thousands every month, simple as
homie spanish ones are nice, at least in the north
elecnor win
You realize that crappy sinewave is only there when the inverter is on, right? How many power cuts are you getting in a week for it to be running on battery all the time?
Not really, the output on most of them looks something like this. The marketing material calls it an "approximated" or "stepped" sinewave with a pretty graphic next to it, but in reality there's only like 2 "steps", the bare minimum
>live in upper middle class neighborhood
>computer's power supply still gets destroyed by one singular power outage
yeah frick that
love my APC UPS
>>gf doesn't want a UPS for her pc
>Why are woman so stupid?
Because it looks like a piece of commercial/industrial equipment and because social media hasn't told her that having one is a cool status symbol.
how do they work exactly
are appliances always running off the battery and it just tops it off when plugged in
or does it switch to battery when it realizes its not connected to power anymore
You can buy both. Always battery is more expensive and drains the battery life. In addition to being more expensive upfront you also have to change it more often. The models that switch over cost less and the battery lasts longer.
The batteries in my UPS were supposed to be replaced 2 years ago according to it's software but they still work fine
Am I going to die in a house fire?
>want to buy UPS
>want to buy POE switch
>POE switch draws more power than UPS
>buy bigger UPS
>buy bigger switch
>POE switch draws more power than UPS (again)
>repeat
I have no fricking clue what I'm supposed to be looking for as far as wattage or active pfc or pure sine.
If your PC draws 1000W and your PSU is rated for 1000W it means the PSU will keep your PC running for three minutes while the PC can shut down safely. Get passive pfc + pure sine. Active pfc is only necessary beyond 1000W. Pure sine is not necessary but very good for PC components.
Yea I only have a 750W PSU. I was just under the impression mine required pure sine
But do you also have 750W power draw? Consumer UPS stop at 1000W. Anything beyond that would drain your UPS within seconds. My UPS can keep my idle Windows 10 PC running for 50 minutes.
I haven't tested it.
Literally me after every sprint deployment.
It's a peaceful life.
I'd like to, since power outages are an almost weekly occurrence in my turd world shithole, but a decent UPS is too expensive.
>A stop job is running for systemd-logout-daemon-gerbil [ 1s/120s ] ........
>The battery backup has a 40 second runtime.
Thanks systemd!
You're moronic, I have been using a cheap thingy thing from walmart for two decades and never had issues
>his computer doesn't have a BUILT-IN ups
u wot m8
How do brownouts damage your computer exactly? Is it too late for me?
Only your PSU might suffer.
I have a UPS on my PC and it saved it from a power cut 2 hours ago
I have a small UPS for my rack, which has the router, switch, and home server. CCTV cameras use PoE so they are also covered with the UPS.
But I don't have one for my computer. I had planned to install one, but got stuck on the planning phase, and didn't get to do it yet.
But now I decided not to do it. It's not worth it. Instead, I'm installing a battery for the whole house. It's much cheaper than installing multiple UPS in the long run, and will keep the lights on for much longer than any UPS. I plan to install one that should last ~8h with my usage.
What do you guys think of it?
do i still need a voltage regulator if I already have a ups?
Which double conversion UPS does IQfy recommend?
>UPS
You mean my laptop battery?
Yes, I have it
thirdie hands typed this post
havent had a power outage in over a decade
>You have a UPS for your pc, right anon?
No. I live in Louisiana. On the rare occasion the power goes out, it stays out for a week or three because a hurricane blew through.
I don't, because I live in a civilised country, but if someone was offering me a UPS, I'd plug it in, why not.
>Power goes out
>computer stays on
>still able to nut
Based battery backup
It's stupid to buy a UPS in the Third World, because the models here are utter trash.
Yes I have a UPS, because when someone starts the dryer to be more than 40 degrees celsius or spin at more than 1200 RPM then the power goes out.
