    GPT-4 recs:

"Old Man's War" by John Scalzi - While not necessarily "campy", it offers a humorous but serious perspective on the military aspect of science fiction.
"Hammer's Slammers" by David Drake - This series could be considered military science fiction with a raw, over-the-top flair.
"The Stainless Steel Rat" by Harry Harrison - If you liked "Bill, the Galactic Hero", you might also enjoy this series, which offers a similar mix of humour and sci-fi.
"Armor" by John Steakley - A book that focuses more on the psychological aspects of warfare, but still offers some action and exaggeration.
"Deathstalker" by Simon R. Green - This series is full of over-the-top characters and wild plot twists that make it a kind of "space opera on steroids".
"Redshirts" also by John Scalzi - A humorous look at military life in space, heavily inspired by "Star Trek".
"Grunt Life" by Weston Ochse - A sci-fi novel with some humour, but also dealing with more serious issues like PTSD.

Old Man's War has sort of a comic premise but very much fits the mold. The later ones less so but they are decent.

Oh, and Red Rising has some really fun military sci-fi. A bit more "Ancient Greeks in space," style, and like Warhammer for a focus on cool fights instead of believability.

But the first book was edited to be YA and is more a better Ender's Game/Hunger Games story.

Forever war by Joe Hadleman is meant to be a rebuttal to the novel starship troopers. It's not Campy or OTT but it is military and very funny.

I had the gift of getting late to watching it at the theater and losing the first few minutes of the movie. That almost infinitely improved my enjoyment of it.
