A good first-time linux distro is one that you can just download and it just works. Your goal now is to escape the Microsoft Black person plantation. Mint is one of them but consider debian or ubuntu.
Ultimately you are playing the waiting game of having a polished desktop on linux, which still isn't here in 2024.
Wayland is still buggy
KDE and plasma 6 was a big buggy dissapointment.
Mint is the closest in terms of reliability, stability, support and it works very well.
Guess we'll just have to use linux mint until KDE sorts itself out.
PopOS made a moronic decision they should've just switched to cinnamon and helped develop wayland on this DE if they really wanted to progress the linux desktop.
Every distro on linux should move to KDE as their main DE because it's the future of linux.
>KDE and plasma 6 was a big buggy dissapointment. >Every distro on linux should move to KDE as their main DE because it's the future of linux.
I swear, nothing ever changes with this OS. I have been hearing this shit about KDE since version 4
Well valve made KDE the primary DE for the steam deck so it has no choice at this point.
We just need unification so QT/wayland seems like the future that everyone should be developing/pushing for if that's the way the linux desktop is going towards.
Gnome is a steaming pile of shit, I'm not a programmer tho so I wouldn't know how hard it is to develop for each.
Mint is good for what it is, a stable reliable and fast ubuntu desktop build on X11 cinnamon without snaps using GTK. IMO I think mint will bring back KDE when X11 becomes completely unviable. Until then I'm sticking with mint.
I don't even disagree with you. I guess I'm just tired of Linux sucking.
It felt like the Linux desktop was starting to mature and gain traction in the mid-2000s. Then KDE 4 released and broke KDE. Then GNOME 3 released and broke GNOME.
It feels like Linux never fully recovered from that.
Can confirm Im on KDE right now , there are some screen bugs that are annoying - I still like it a lot and nothing major that I need breaks so I don't mind.
>and helped develop wayland on this DE if they really wanted to progress the linux desktop.

Say anything other than Mint. I guarantee you that normie will come back to you with normie issues. Do you have the energy to solve all their problems and answer the same questions everytime a new windows users jumps in linux? I don't. That's why I recommend Mint and go with my day

it doesn't necessarily need to be innovative. but every time you use a derivative you move away from the source, which adds complexity and means you need to trust yet another set of people/infrastructure.

Performance is shit compared to every other DE due to being forked from early GNOME 3.
Customizability is also shit. You can basically just change the theme (which, thank God, have you seen Mint-Y?) and the panel layout.

Arch isn't a "learning" distro, it's for people who are already familiar with *nix.
what if I don't want to "learn Linux"
what if I just want an OS that'll work out of the box and won't be bloated with AI shit and NSA spyware
If you're only switching for the sake of privacy, you will probably hate it. Just warning you now. If you want a smooth experience, some degree of learning is unavoidable, and the UX is just not the same as Windows.
Otherwise, yes, Mint is a perfectly fine distro.
i don't, but I think some people find it to be very windows esque - but I think thats only for the autists that need like a 1:1 port to stay sane yet try something new.
Or corps that might want linux ,to save costs but not alienate their workforce too much.
Yeah, yeah, have your laughs. Make your diversions. Just remember, that when I am king you will be FIRST UPON THE WALL! Useless peons babbling about nothing of consequence, letting all signaling fall between your delicate, awkward little Linux Mint fricking fingers.
what would my motive be? honestly?
is there some great conspiracy to get people to try out Mint?
i give credit where credit is due, i am very experienced in linux and i use it, but then again i do not define myself but what OS i use.. looking right at you arch gays
Mint has an outdated kernel and might not work everywhere. If youre new to linux, stick to basics, or or your laptops volume buttons wont work or something and absolutely nobody on any forum will help you fix them. Try Debian or Gentoo
It's the best out of the box just werks distro option right now, until people get their heads out of their asses and work on KDE and stop fragmenting the linux Desktop.
Cinnamon has a right to exist, but mint team should really drop MATE/XFCE as they are old abandonware, make a linux mint plasma edition and keep cinnamon as a backup.
Year of the linux desktop won't come without unification. Gnome is holding this back, GTK is holding this back.
KDE is already supported by valve, wayland and gamescope is already supported by valve.
it's already clear QT is easier and more compatible with wayland.
Come on in for the big win instead of fragmenting linux for the 10000th time.
No, you will add the oibaf or whatever PPA to have an update kernel and Mesa drivers, then you will add another repo to update Lutris and Wine/Proton and everything is going to shit itself.
If all you are going to do is shitpost on IQfy then yeah it alright
It's the best, just works out of the box with sensible default settings, polished for linux standards, it even has the same keybindings as windows for almost everything. Just avoid mate wich is bugged and redundant.
I would recommend either Debian or Mint. You should avoid Ubuntu. They have ads in the terminal for their pro Ubuntu and force snap packages on you among other nonsense. It's a terrible corporate distro.
The thing with Debian is that they their main desktop environment is Gnome. If you want any other desktop environment than that you should know that the Debian team puts very little effort into the images that ship with other desktop environments. Their Gnome image is very good however, so I would consider that too.
If you want something more windows-like however, I would go with Mint. Any of their desktop environments are fine, really, but Cinnamon is their main one.
How else does Mint differ from Ubuntu besides the following?
- Mint has flatpak, Ubuntu has snap
- Mint does not have GNOME or KDE
- Ubuntu has ads in terminal
- Ubuntu has Ubuntu Pro (free subscription for more comprehensive security updates)
