I currently make six figures doing a development job that doesnt take my skills for granted. Leetcode is a skill but it doesnt teach you anything. Any basics of optimization and other such things are learned as you become a better programmer in general. Ive ran into so much production code that doesn't even bother to use the techniques they use, not to mention the thousands of libraries out there that give you ready made algoritms, it's a waste of time.
I gave up on this shit after six months. Literal waste of time. I got turned down by so many jobs cause of these stupid tests. I'm pretty sure a lot of companies have turned away good programmers like me in droves, allowing for nepotism to control the FAANGs of the world.

I was on the fence of moving to those states to begin with prior to getting interviewed. The only way Id accept it is if the offers were sweet deals to makeup having to live in either of those places.

Is it bad practice to just solve a Leetcode problem using a built in function? Like the "Find the Index of the First Occurrence in a String" problem, you can instantly solve it with .find() but you're not really learning anything that way.
The spirit of Leetcode is to do things in ways that would get your ass beaten at work.
Just take a month or three and grind. Christ some of you are lazy. I went from $170k to $350k ( $500k with appreciation) by getting gud at leetcode. It is what it is.

Why do they only care about IQ for software engineers then? Everyone else including the seniors managers and VPs that give all the coding teams marching orders don't take them, electrical/mechanical/aerospace/etc. engineers don't take them.
Because every SWE job posting is flooded with a torrent of CS bachelors and bootcampers who can't even solve Two Sum in O(n) time, and you need some way to filter out the candidates.

The O(n) solution is difficult to intuitively understand and nobody would write code like this in any codebase that many people will have to read and maintain. So leetcode is basically encouraging bad software engineering practices.

That kind of thing isn't what people get hired for anyway. Like 75% of the job is knowing the business, 20% is being likable, and 5% is number crunching or theory. If you deal with any industry, you get quizzed on technical aspects of things pertinent to that industry. For example, a technical interview for a job in medical records will ask you about HL7. In this case, knowing about HL7 is more important than knowing about hash maps or anything you're going to see on jeetcode.
This applies to every industry. Pick one out of a hat. They all need techies, but they need techies who know that industry. 75% of your final grade is knowing that industry. Maybe 20% is raw tech Asperger's.

I have a high IQ, but I'm a terrible performer. It's not about pressure, it's just when there's an interview going on, my brain focuses on the social interaction and nothing else. It's hard to think when you have some stranger breathing down your neck who is sizing you up.
You need to practice. No one passes these things cold. They suck but it is what it is.

Leetcode is less a joke that the people taking it seriously. I use it more as a way to think about different problems and discover new/different ways of doing things.
