Count how many WebMs were posted in this thread. (That's zero.) Now count how many images were posted in this thread. It's a lot worse for images to have an exploit than for videos to have them. I have WebM embedding disabled by default for security reasons, and videos in general have many measures taken against them by browsers and websites, but the abomination of a single-frame video that is WebP circumvents that.

            [...]

The reason PDF sucks is because all the viewers are shit and the format has an absurdly oversized standard. Have you guys ever read the PDF format specification? It is something like 500 pages long. The DVD specification itself isn't half as big.

WebP sucks because all that 99.999% of websites do is recompress their existing content into WebP, including all their existing lossy coded images. It is a huge frick you to the image quality of the entire internet.
Granted, they also do that with JPG because Google Pagespeed warns them that using JPG over a certain encoding quality is bad. In fact IQfy itself does this because image recompression is a feature in Cloudflare to reduce bandwidth by making the images smaller.

I told them to get fricked after my committee and supervisor said IEEE and they said APA was the uni requirement. They tried nitpicking about PDF standards claiming that hyperlinks were requires for the PDF/A standard. I told them to get fricked again. My prof mentioned he had to work with them on the future and to stop making a fuss.

They're made so they can a remote exploit. If you have jpg remote exploit all of a sudden people are going to be like "heyy someone did that intentionally". But if you invent new.unecessary.image.format they are likely to say "oh its new they haven't worked out the bugs". But of course you would already be aware of the potential problems and the code should be secure from the start. I mean especially for something you are going to expect 99% of computer users to run on their machines right?

          Anonymous

          BASED schizo.

However in reality WebP -> AVIF -> Next meme format
Are only made up for 2 reasons
          1) Soft DRM basically after you download the meme file you can not view it.

Most zoomers can not convert files or edit them in GIMP. So it is blocked form being re-uploaded.

However the time wasted for doing this or having the right plugin is also another barier.

          2) Because mega corporation need more money.
Notice that the saving of 1% of space and transfer speeds only benefit mega corporations who have billions of pictures on their servers.

webm > gif. It's not perfect by any means, but it's a big improvement. Anyone using actual gif files in 2024 should be shot in front of their family.

And what's the actual problem with PDF? It does the job of converting presentations or text files into format that can be open elsewhere without worry that formatting will change. Go ahead, I'm listening.

It's massively overused. There are lots of things other formats are better for that PDFs get used for anyway.

          >APNG
          Even less support than WebP

It's literally just a wrapper for html so it shares all the bad things of html like messed up formatting. Also sometimes it's divided in multiple html files and the index gets fricked. It would've been better if it were just an HTML file so I could have just opened it using any web browser, but it's shit.
PDFs are way better for books:
          >correct formatting guaranteed
          >even if the links don't work can just go to the page number from the index page
          >highlighting lines is saved to the file itself not the cache of some epub reader so that you can see what you've highlighted if you open the file from another device

Is fb2/3 better? Also PDF files suck for e-books because of hard-formating.

Hard-formatting is good because it makes sure the book looks the same on all screens. Epub morons never manage to display the HTML correctly with different screen sizes and fonts, shit breaks up. Epub coding books suffer from this a lot, often the code snippets are an utter mess.

            explain

ZIP. Anything really still using the DEFLATE compression algorithm. Forgot it's name but it's some ultra niche possibly CLI only file compression format specifically for macOS.

Linux is not a file format.

            [...]
            [...]
            [...]
Past bitrate accommodating 24KHz waveforms and more channels for stereo or surround, there's not much point in differentiating between different audio file formats.

            [...]
This literally means that you shouldn't have a program that achieves a purpose and have irrelevant functionality built in. Like a CLI tool that helps manipulate your disk AND lets drops you into a text prompt allowing you to draw vector art. As part of that philosophy, these two functions should be split into their own respective tools to be invoked and maintained separately.

This has mostly been dead since the Web and multimedia revolution of the 90's. Since then, a single focused program can have multiple different functionalities combined together and still work. For example, video player is not too much different from one that can play audio or just plainly showing a picture.

zip is cool i used it all the time to compress ssh traffick

That quote is 99% or more times used by those who are envious of polymaths. Usually they say it as a psychological monkey-wrench to undermine your value and next breath they want your help for FREE or a discount and often will call you for help hopefully for less or for FREE or a discount.

From experience and observation it is very much possible to utterly master multiple trades. Consider, the talented composer Borodin was a chemist and a composer.

The typical brainlet envies polymaths. No polymath says "Jack of all trades master of none" and/or leaves off the other part.

ZIP. Anything really still using the DEFLATE compression algorithm. Forgot it's name but it's some ultra niche possibly CLI only file compression format specifically for macOS.

Linux is not a file format.

The patents on mp3 expired so it's not a big deal anymore

I use APNG instead of GIF.
      [...]
It's still crap compared to OGG.

FLAC and the morons worshiping the producer god of 20kHz+ hearing.

Past bitrate accommodating 24KHz waveforms and more channels for stereo or surround, there's not much point in differentiating between different audio file formats.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_philosophy#Do_One_Thing_and_Do_It_Well

This literally means that you shouldn't have a program that achieves a purpose and have irrelevant functionality built in. Like a CLI tool that helps manipulate your disk AND lets drops you into a text prompt allowing you to draw vector art. As part of that philosophy, these two functions should be split into their own respective tools to be invoked and maintained separately.

This has mostly been dead since the Web and multimedia revolution of the 90's. Since then, a single focused program can have multiple different functionalities combined together and still work. For example, video player is not too much different from one that can play audio or just plainly showing a picture.

        >For example, video player is not too much different from one that can play audio or just plainly showing a picture.
A video player should handle only the rendering. Decoding the various streams it uses as input should be delegated to dedicated libraries for that functionality. That's proper implementation of 'do one thing and do it well'. Showing a picture is a good example of how not going with this philosophy can lead to bad results. A video player should never focus on showing pictures, as that would necessitate the addition of highly-demanded image viewer functionality, like pressing left/right/some other hotkey to move to the next image. When watching a video, I don't want any single key to change the loaded stream or otherwise lose my video position. The more image viewer elements you add to your video player, the more the video player aspect is negatively affected. And this is from an end-user perspective; on the development side it results in excessive unnecessary dependencies and complicates maintenance. Stick to the one thing your program is made for, and delegate everything else to other programs that do it better. Even if you have to code those other things yourself, split them off into entirely separate components to prevent the aforementioned issues.

And what's the actual problem with PDF? It does the job of converting presentations or text files into format that can be open elsewhere without worry that formatting will change. Go ahead, I'm listening.

      >And what's the actual problem with PDF?

PDFs are what you get when boomers can't be bothered to use anything else. So PDFs become a format for images, forms, documents, drawings, etc. There is a lot of functionality that can only be used with abode's software. I had to borrow my sisters computer to submit a government form with abode. There was a button in the PDF that submitted the form. How far away from the concept of "digital paper" is that?

I think a modified epub format could work as a simplified "digital paper".

        >I think a modified epub format could work as a simplified "digital paper".
HTML as a standard is ready to be print-ready digital paper.
The only thing stopping it is that browser developers are stalling on implementing the parts of the HTML standard that only apply to printing.
Seriously, there are non-browser implementations of HTML renderers that actually implement all the print format features. Publishers can literally do the layout for a book in a web-first format, and then use these tools to create the print version.
It just hasn't penetrated the consumer web browsers yet, and may not ever.

PrinceXML is the dominant one in that market space, but it's closed source.
I've wanted to adopt HTML for legal contract formatting at work (create an on-rails WYSIWYG HTML editor that enforces our in-house stylistic conventions), but the thing that is hard-stopping the project is that without proper browser support for the full printing feature set of the HTML spec, we can't guarantee an externally printed copy looks identical to an internally printed copy.

Post-2010 newbies on imageboards are often underage and extremely moronic to the point of not knowing how to lurk or understand basic stuff. You have your evidence right in front of you that IQfy is swarmed by these newbies.

Despite the existence of archives, they will break down in rage if you say Reddit spacing is a myth. It was invented in 2012 by a phoneposter to get them to type like morons so he can scroll less. Mods and feds endorsed the myth in 2016 after seeing its success because it makes them more money (reduces server load, saves more paper, space, etc).

There isn't an imageboard where over 90% of its userbase are newbies. Post-2010 newbies on imageboards are often underage and extremely moronic to the point of not knowing how to lurk or understand basic stuff. does. In fact, it improves readability if done well. But

These newbies are the only ones who are dumb enough to think Reddit spacing isn't a hoax, buy a IQfy pass or not understand how to block ads after seeing people talk about it. Also, they've no idea what an archive is. Mods hate archives. These newbies are the model user of mods.

's second "paragraph" isn't a new paragraph, it's a single sentence that only makes sense as part of the preceding paragraph and doesn't introduce any change in subject or focus. It would've made much more sense as the closing sentence of the first paragraph, which is now left hanging without any proper conclusion.

Now, when you start talking about something new or focus on a different point, THAT's when you switch to a new paragraph. Paragraphs group related sections of text together, allowing the reader to more easily distinguish different subjects or arguments. This paragraph is about the proper construction of paragraphs, in contrast to the previous one, which is about improper construction of paragraphs. The empty newline serves as separator between the sections.

But if you add a newline after every sentence or every other sentence, that's not a paragraph.

At that point, you're probably doing it out of habit.

For example, a habit formed by Reddit where you need to newline twice to write a single newline.

That's why they call it Reddit spacing.

            Anonymous

Yeah, that's the difference. I want them to stay in a column like that. And I assume the original post did too, because the reason there's a difference is that "postcontainer" is a typo that forgot to capitalize "postContainer", and thus has no effect. You can remove it or leave it spelled wrong if you don't care about the quotes pushing it out to the side.

Moot has always been a normalgay, but other than the very start of IQfy (where everyone posted in a moronic manner) he used to post properly. He was probably already disillusioned with IQfy by 2009. The post-2014 posts aren't even worth responding about.

            >a habit formed by Reddit where you need to newline twice to write a single newline.
            Bullshit.
Reddit creates an empty line between texts if you press enter once.
That's why so many posts on IQfy look like this.
There are five reasons why soneone types like this.
You think that Reddit and IQfy use the same text editor.
This is what you do if you're a stupid little shit who grew up on Reddit.
Or because you believe Reddit spacing to be real or want others to think it is real.
A hoax invented by a phoneposter to get self-conscious Redditphobic newbie to type like morons so there'll be less scrolling.
Or because you're a mod/fed trying to make more money by reducing server load and being able to fit more posts on a printed paper and in a storage device.
Yes, every IQfy post gets printed and digitally saved.

Maybe with the new interface, but the old interface let you put newlines in the text box but then just ignored the newline and appended the text onto the previous line.

Back in 2003, almost all non-original anime was adapted from manga, so if you were discussing one you were likely discussing the other as well. By the time of the split, VNs and light novels were regularly getting adaptations, but most VN discussion (and what little LN discussion there was) was unrelated to anime, so it got kicked off. Nowadays most anime is adapted from LNs and manga is more of a separate thing.

Are you incapable of reading? Reddit's old interface required two newlines (that is: two enters, not two empty lines, I shouldn't have to clarify this on fricking IQfy) to get an actual newline, otherwise you'd get no newline at all.

Or because you're a mod/fed trying to make more money by reducing server load and being able to fit more posts on a printed paper and in a storage device.

Word has an option to turn off compression of images (annoying feature). If you don't turn that off the images will drop in quality.

Also that you have to make sure thumbnails are embedded or else it won't in some versions.

I've found that it helps to avoid putting high DPI images in a Word document that are very large because that could possibly make it run slow if you have many of them.

A program like Faststone or Photoshop can be used to reduce size or resolution IIRC.

imagine getting students to collectively waste lifetimes formatting documents with a proprietary word processor when all that really matters is the content.

unless you're submitting it to some journal there should be no formatting. can you imagine the lifetimes that have been wasted getting the formatting just write for some bullshit assignment worth 5% of your grade in a single class? it should be criminal.

Formatting helps readability. For most texts there are more readers than writers. The extra time expenditure for the writer is compensated by saving the reader's time.

Look. Consider the following situation: In an organization, four workers need to eat, but the office manager always skips lunch. The four workers could individually go out and buy their own lunch, which wastes X times * 4 workers. Alternatively, the office manager could go and get lunch for all of them, costing only X * 1 time. The office manager doesn't personally benefit from this as the office manager skips lunch. From the viewpoint of the organization, which of the two options is a bigger waste of time?

When I write an e-mail to my team, I spend some time formatting it for clarity. I only have to write it once so I can spare some extra effort to make it more readable, as that message then has to be read by several people individually. If five minutes of effort saves one minute of effort for 10 people, that's a 50% time savings. I even go through the trouble of putting some effort into my IQfy posts because I know there's a lot of people who will read them.

LZMA can't work on random data like media already compressed by a media codec like H.264. If you give LZMA a WAV, a TIFF, heck, even a non-debayered DNG, it compresses between 20% and 40% (especially if it's frame-aware and does interframe compression)

you can choose whatever bitrate you want, anon; and it's more efficient than MP3 (MPEG1 Layer3) at the same bitrate.
Same as MPEG1 - decoding AC3 when it was state-of-the-art (1992) demanded a Zoran DSP card made by Dolby (and the decoders had 2 cards because at 24 frames per second the processing of each frame took too long, so they had to be interleaved).

The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a widely used file format known for preserving the layout and formatting of documents across different platforms and devices. It’s favored for its reliability and consistency, especially for official documents, forms, and publications. However, some users may find it less flexible compared to other formats when it comes to editing or extracting information. Ultimately, the choice of format depends on the specific needs and preferences of each user.

Huh, this is actually pretty nice. I can imagine building a nice GUI on top of that for batch operations.

PSD is only used for sharing data across Photoshop sessions, right? I don't think it's fair to compare project files only intended to be read by the software that generated it with general use file formats.

Ever since I've started to read scanned books I've disliked how proprietary the PDF editing space is. For example when I come across some book that's scanned as spreads, all of them are sideways, and there's no table of contents, I feel like pic related. I really don't want to cash out for ABBYY FineReader either, nor do I trust it to have any clean warez. There's few free options for different tasks like Scantailor, HandyOutliner, Tesseract GUI's, but I've yet to find a nice workflow with these.

Used exclusively by VPx/AV1 slop encoders, they should just output a raw bitstream instead.

There's nothing wrong with PDF. Did you know that its turing complete? Just don't be moronic and download PDFs from random untrusted sites or emails

Baking execution possibilites into a format intended to render standardized static views sure is genius.

HTML + CSS are also turing complete. There's actually a long history of incorporating key loggers into CSS. At least PDFs look nice

people did used to type like this
with like one sentence per line

    but they also

    used to type like this

the truth is that you didnt spot someone who was an outsider by the way they typed, you'd spot them based on their lack of meme knowledge or them getting offended by shit
now everyone knows the memes, people come here expecting to be offended, and you don't have anything else you can point to to label someone an outsider
so the easiest thing you can do is attack the way someone formats their post, and the double new line thing comes from reddit
it's a terrible and inaccurate way to determine if someone is a newbie

Do outsiders offended you? You just might be one. lol

You can still chase away outsiders with e-girl.

PDFs are literally hell on earth.

Daily reminder that PDF stands for
PRINTABLE document format (regardless what censorship and revisionism Adobe uses) this shit was made to be PRINTED by a printer so you read it on paper.

It is fricked up and often simply copy and past does not work for text.

      >It is fricked up and often simply copy and past does not work for text.
That's because you were moronic and saved it as an image. If the baby ducks itt have trouble with PDFs, I'd love to see how much you'd struggle with professional typesetting applications.

      >made to be PRINTED by a printer so you read it on paper.

Thats means it is more than likely professionally typeset and that one can dependably refer to fixed page numbers for reference purposes.
