Only in America would you need a private company to fill out your taxes for you.

I just downloaded the PDFs from the IRS website, filled them out, and mailed them in. It's kind of a pain but it's not difficult if you can follow instructions and do second-grade arithmetic, it's just that most people in this country can't.

        >PDF
Malaysian here. Even we thirdies only fill up our taxes entirely online since 2010. The online forms are already partially filled and instantly updates when you change the figures.

You can file them online, but at least last year the US IRS was doing some shady shit with a private contractor (id.me) who was using facial recognition to identify you. As in, if you wanted an account to file online you didn't just need personal details and a scan of some government-issued identification, you needed a webcam and to also agree to a private company's lack-of-privacy policy about storing facial-recognition data. So frick them, I'll pay the price of a stamp to not do that, and they can pay more than the price of a stamp to read my paper forms.

Kek, where do you see the word proud in that initial post?
Why are you obsessed with American tax law?

            >So your post should read as only in America do you have options.
This is pride whether you like it or not.
            You're gloating like
            >HAH, WE GET THE CHOICE TO PAY SOMEONE; OR WORK THROUGH 25 PAGES OF JARGON, TAKE THAT
meanwhile in the rest of the world, the government is our b***h and does all the calculations and deductions for us, as well as providing online portals to check and verify the information.

what, in the US they deduct from your paycheck and if you don’t adjust it as you make more money you still have to pay more when taxes are due.
Although I guess getting an interest free loan from Uncle Sam is somewhat based.

You can go to USPS request all your tax forms there and return them to your local government office for free.

why are taxes manual in america?

Mine are imported directly from my company to turbo tax for free then I just have to sign them.

There is an open source tax solver, and free fillable forms which are just PDFs with automatic calculations. I use those.

OpenTaxSolver, I literally used it this year for both CA and federal.
Will report back if it made a mistake but it really saved time having to read all the forms and do all the worksheets, if handles all the intermediary calculations and tax table stuff for you.

It's not just for simple returns either, both my returns were 20+ pages cus I like to swing trade stocks, they cost $2 in postage to mail each, and that was after printing everything double sided. 🙁

      Humiliation Ritual

This but unironically. You need to be reminded of who's on top.

      Anonymous

It's a literal humiliation ritual to remind every American that they're being robbed by the federal government, it's supposed to sting.
This is why no congress has succeeded in making taxes automatic, it's already fricking automated, the IRS already knows how much you make from all electronic sources, and will bill you if you don't file.

        Anonymous

That's what it was *supposed* to be, but the IRS turned that on its head with automatic (and mandatory) withholding, to try and make people think of tax day as "I get a refund", instead of "look how much the government is stealing from me". They steal more and then give you a kickback and much of the population falls for it.

It's the IRS punishing you for being a wagie instead of having a business with real business expenses you can deduct and pay far less in taxes than wagecucks even if you make the same amount.

There's already free e-file alternatives provided by the IRS, people have no clue how to fill out the forms themselves and think they will get audited or thrown in jail for filling them out wrong.
