    In my experience:
    >vlc
just works, UI is normie friendly
    >mpv
just werks, UI is a bit autistic for normies
    >which is better
Both just work, but mpv is a lot more powerful if you get autistic over it.

This. Both are superior to stock media players, mpv is superior to VLC for power users or tinkerers

This. madVR is basically a litmus test for video players.

What does madVR do to make it a killer feature?

        Anonymous

        Dynamic HDR tonemapping.
        High quality image scalers
Antiringing filters for said scalers (pretty much no other application has this feature, and if they do, it's low quality and an afterthought)
Gamma correction and gamut mapping for calibrated displays.
High quality deinterlacing and IVTC filters for interlaced content
Debanding and other assorted artifact removal filters (deringing, deblocking etc) for shitty compressed videos
Display-aware synchronization, so basically frame-perfect presentation with low A/V sync deviations.
Motion judder removal if you're still unfortunate enough to be stuck on a 60hz display, and you're watching 24fps content.

          >Dynamic HDR tonemapping.
Is there any guide or resource for setting it up? Mainly for watching 4k HDR on a 1080p monitor

            Anonymous

devices > your monitor > hdr > tonemap using pixel shaders

Defaults are fine, you can toy around with some of the finer settings if you're highly autistic, but the only important part is that the tonemapping using dynamic peak detection, aka it calculates the average "brightness" per scene and makes sure to tonemap appropriately. Other video renderers like MPC-BE's MPC-VR renderer is terrible because of this.

Also make sure to uncheck all of the trade quality of performance options

Proper tone mapping and proper motion interpolation if you're not using a multiple of the frame rate

I was still using MPC-HC but then I realized that it's much easier to just add a few lines to a config file (not to mention having more settings), so I switched to MPV.

Not true, it has faster startup but that's all. Overall it's heavier than both VLC and MPC, takes more ram and runs poorly on old hardware.
