whatever plays ur video files, dont fall for the filters meme. theres better things to do with your time than sitting in an mpv.conf file (you could actually be watching the stuff you downloaded)
In my experience: >vlc
just works, UI is normie friendly >mpv
just werks, UI is a bit autistic for normies >which is better
Both just work, but mpv is a lot more powerful if you get autistic over it.
Dynamic HDR tonemapping.
High quality image scalers
Antiringing filters for said scalers (pretty much no other application has this feature, and if they do, it's low quality and an afterthought)
Gamma correction and gamut mapping for calibrated displays.
High quality deinterlacing and IVTC filters for interlaced content
Debanding and other assorted artifact removal filters (deringing, deblocking etc) for shitty compressed videos
Display-aware synchronization, so basically frame-perfect presentation with low A/V sync deviations.
Motion judder removal if you're still unfortunate enough to be stuck on a 60hz display, and you're watching 24fps content.
>Dynamic HDR tonemapping.
Is there any guide or resource for setting it up? Mainly for watching 4k HDR on a 1080p monitor

devices > your monitor > hdr > tonemap using pixel shaders
Defaults are fine, you can toy around with some of the finer settings if you're highly autistic, but the only important part is that the tonemapping using dynamic peak detection, aka it calculates the average "brightness" per scene and makes sure to tonemap appropriately. Other video renderers like MPC-BE's MPC-VR renderer is terrible because of this.
Also make sure to uncheck all of the trade quality of performance options
>Top notch HDR tone mapping if your TV is shit (~400 nits peak) or doesn't support HDR; or if you have a projector >flawless chroma and luma upscaling algorithms >NGU still the king for image doubling >high quality dithering >takes absolutely no shortcut to deliver the highest quality possible, assuming you have the hardware to back it up
I was still using MPC-HC but then I realized that it's much easier to just add a few lines to a config file (not to mention having more settings), so I switched to MPV.
only because it's buggy as shit and video and audio are desynced. you can afford to open quickly if you arent even bothering to explicitly sync video and audio
>If you want something light, MPV
Not true, it has faster startup but that's all. Overall it's heavier than both VLC and MPC, takes more ram and runs poorly on old hardware.
mpv on linux and windows
vlc on android tv
why mpv instead of vlc?
he is autistic, it's obviously vlc
it's lighter on real machine. but is worthless on android tv
VLC
BSPlayer with skins

i genuinely don't know how to configure VLC the way i want it so i just switched to mpv.
MPC-BE just werks
mpv
ffplay
mpv
it just works
MPC-QT
the answer hasn't changed in the last 15 years, it is still MPC-HC.
vlc and mpv are memes.
mpv
Dayum PodPlayer
MPC-BE
PotPlayer
CCCP
MPV on both Windows and Android.
same as it ever was
mpc-hc with madvr
Anything that isn't VLC
When did anime take such a fricking nosedive?
What do you mean?
When anime studios realized it was more profitable to pander directly to evolutionary failures.

>Anime website
Accept it or leave you subredditor.
trainme was never good, newfriend
Unironically VLC I have yet to see a non-meme reason for using something else
The traffic cone one
MPC-HC+madVR+libass
Anyone recommending mpv is not worth taking seriously
MPC-HC for BDMVs/ Blu-Rays
mpv for everything else

This. Both are superior to stock media players, mpv is superior to VLC for power users or tinkerers
VLC+MPC-HC combo
MPC-BE is too bloated and has nasty progress bar, feels like fork made by mpvgays.
VLC 4.0
Whichever supports madvr
Anything else is either for normies (VLC) or straight up unusable if you prefer quality
This. madVR is basically a litmus test for video players.
What does madVR do to make it a killer feature?
Dynamic HDR tonemapping.
High quality image scalers
Antiringing filters for said scalers (pretty much no other application has this feature, and if they do, it's low quality and an afterthought)
Gamma correction and gamut mapping for calibrated displays.
High quality deinterlacing and IVTC filters for interlaced content

Proper tone mapping and proper motion interpolation if you're not using a multiple of the frame rate
I was still using MPC-HC but then I realized that it's much easier to just add a few lines to a config file (not to mention having more settings), so I switched to MPV.
literal fake shill post
Not at all. MPC-HC is great and I'd still be using it if it wasn't for some specific shit I needed.
mpc-be
mpv
loads up and seeks way faster than any other media player
only because it's buggy as shit and video and audio are desynced. you can afford to open quickly if you arent even bothering to explicitly sync video and audio
The Cone will always win just because of the Santa hat. Frick fun-haters.
VLC, mpv is for bored autistic people.
If you have an Nvidia RTX card, VLC supports the superresolution thing, it's AI upscaling for your movies and animes
MPV and VLC 3.0.18
>MPC-HC+madVR
Knowers.
>VLC

Normies.
>mpv
morons.
MPC-HC for windows
MPV for linux
>MPC-HC
Probably this one still, though I don't know what the HE variant is like.
why not -BE?
If you have to ask, you won't notice any difference. VLC is good enough.

Watch Minami-ke.
If you want something light, MPV
Something versatile but heavy, VLC
Something in the middle, MPC-HC

MPC-BE + madVR
