Because they're not smart, and smart people just seem needlessly standoffish and mean, when you're too dumb to understand their reasons for thinking or doing things.

Empathy unironically increases with intelligence, so dumb people are therefore too dumb to understand smart people.
Because the smart person corrects the stupid person and points out that as a stupid person they can not sympathize with a smart person, only empathize.

Enough smart people are too lazy to develop their social skills that they come off as (or are unable to mask that they are) buttholes to average people, so your average person is left to assume someone smarter than them is an butthole.
Average people get by on intuition and that intuition is at least more often correct than incorrect or our species would already be extinct.
Dumb people generally just think "good social skills" means never disagreeing with them though. They don't understand what a friendly discussion is.
They don't understand that because I told someone they got a cake recipe wrong, I wasn't attacking them as a person. I was trying to help them make a better cake.
I've seen people become furious over these kinds of misunderstandings. It's a very real thing.
